Trust me, five years from now you will be using something of a cross between the Kindle and an iPad. There is no reason whatsoever that you cannot use an iPad to read and not bother with the rest of the stuff while you are reading. And once color eInk comes along, Amazon and Apple and Google and others will all flock to it.

But for the present, I agree with you, I'll keep my Kindle and see what the market comes up with in a few years. I certainly would not purchase the first version of the iPad, just as I did not purchase the first release of the Kindle or the Sony.

Looking forward to firmware 2.5 on my Kindle for the sharper fonts and organizing books into collections. Even without it, the Kindle is GREAT!!!

Color E-ink..... To read Tolstoy in Neon Pink? For Comix that are not Published n Japan (most Manga is in Black and white)?

I actually NEVER want to see color e-ink come to life.... Plus a mate of mine in Organic Chemistry says it ain't so easy to do with e-ink technology....

Sigh its so poor. I understand that you can argue about backlight some people seem to have and some people don't seem to have. But there is one issue what makes the iPad the biggest looser in every reader contest which is just fact.

Yesterday we had the best weather here. Sunshine all along. DREAMWEATHER. So you move outside and you see NOTHING. Pretty sure the usual people will swear they can see everything in the direct sun just have to change the viewing angle but this is just BS.

The other will tell you that they never read in direct sunlight. Fine. Good for the vampires between us but when there is good weather and i have much time for reading i don't want to sit inside the house cause of my super duper reader. Would be really ironic if after Steve Jobs tries to tell me what to read he now also should be able to tell me where and when to read

So the one thing which can not argued away is iPad outside + sun = no go.

Don't want to sound harsh but anybody who denies that fact has to be a fanatic fanboy.

That would maybe be the nr. 1 reason for me to always prefer the DX over the iPad.

But if i am honest, i like my iPad very much. So if you can afford the best will be keep your DX for reading and get a cheap 16GB Wifi iPad.

Sichsa, just to play the Devil's advocate here, how many days a years do you get 'dreamweather' where you are? Because just based on that point, the argument you're making goes something like: Don't buy an iPad because it won't be much good on those dream days. As for the rest of the year, when the weather is mostly miserable, it's fine.... :-)

I don't see an iPad as something that would substitute a e-reader. It serves different purposes. Go buy an iPad if you like it (personally I see it as a nice toy), but not for reading e-books...

Agreed. It's very nice and I like it much better than I thought I would. I even read books on it when I'm not myself. Emergency reading situations? I don't read in emergency situations.

We don't have "dreamweather" the whole year but 90% of the time when we have dreamweather i am in the mood to move out and read something.

When i'm on vacation there is a really good chance that we spent the time into the sun = relax time = reading.

And the question is when you have a reading device should it really lack in that feature? For me i know the answer for sure, the threadstarter has to make his own decision.

Absolutely! I wish they would install a coffee making feature in the next DX! :-) You never really know when you might feel like having one. Joking aside, for me nothing beats a real paper book -- least of all a glitzy toy. I guess in those 10% instances of "dreamweather", I'd happily settle for paper!

As the satisfied owner of an iPad, I agree with you, so long as "read" means "reading ebooks" & "amused" means "reading things other than ebooks."

I have 3 ereaders (iLiad, Sony 505 & Kindle 2i) & now an iPad as well. I'm still using my ereaders for reading novels & I am using my iPad for reading digital magazines, blogs & web browsing, Twitter, email, managing contacts & calendar, games, note taking, photo viewing, video podcast watching, tv show watching, etc. I will also use the iPad for viewing colour PDFs (computer proframming text books). So I see the iPad as an all-round Internet & multimedia device, but still have a need for my Kindle as well (don't see a need to have 3 e-readers, but hey).

BTW, dual boot screens have been prototyped. They can boot to either LCD or e-ink. I think that we are likely to see them in future ereaders & tablet computers. http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/03/v...d-at-computex/

It is already available. It is called 'entourage edge' (http://www.entourageedge.com/). It combines 2 displays. One e-ink display and 1 LCD touchscreen Android tablet.
Sorry, no color e-ink yet.

Unhappy Reading on Ipad vs a dedicated e-ink reader

Hmm. This depends on your age , accumulated eye-strain, and the reflection that you surely get from the glossy screen on the Ipad. Reading on my measly Sony prs 300 is just like reading a book, which isn't something I experienced while I tried to read on a friend's Ipad.

By the way I am close to 60 and have a pronounced problem after extended periods of browsing the Internet and/or trying to read pdfs on my laptop.

PS. regards to all, this is my first post here.

No disrespect to you, pat.indie, but that's one ugly looking eReader!

No offense taken, but I disagree. It looks wonderful.

And when I get both e-ink and LCD display on the same device, I am not complaining about much else (not that I am )

Also, when I read books I look at the print. I put functionality at the top of my list of reasons to get a particular gadget. But hey, what works for me does not have to work for everyone..

Hi pat.indie. I guess, as is often said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That aside, it's quite a bulky device to lug around with, no? Kinda' defeats the idea of portability. Further, I can't imagine battery life is great on it. Also, it folds just like laptop -- in which case why not just settle for a netbook! It's bit of an overkill...
