And the eInk folks should be prepared for folks who completely dismiss the eye strain marketing campaign as nothing but that. Still, I would have to agree on one thing about the iPad - its a little big and heavy for me (my own opinion). I want something smaller to read with, but not eInk. Honestly, I even prefer my old eBookwise-1150 over any eInk device. Reading in bed is so much more fun without some attached light or lamp that keeps my wife awake.

I'm disappointed in the iPad. I wanted an Apple Netbook. The iPad looks so inconvenient to carry around and there's no way to prop it up. I know turning the pages of a book on it is cool but....I wouldn't want to wear out my eyes with it's backlit screen or try to hold on to it, not to mention its short battery life. I'm very contented with my pocket eReader.

Oh yea....if you don't like "typing" on the iPad, just download "SlideIt" or "Swype" and use those. A very cool way to 'type'....hopefully they work on the iPad.

Dismissing marketing campaign - Fine. Dismissing experience of actual members of this forum is a different matter. That would be unkind and arrogant. If people complain of eye strain and you don't have it, then you just have to accept that some people are less lucky than you.
eInk bunch is usually very peaceful. LCD camp on the other hand behaves irrationally. Every time eInk fan says: a gadget with LCD screen cannot be considered an ebook reader by me, LCD crowd howls and screams LCD discrimination!
When LCD fan says: eInk doesn't fulfil my needs, eInk camp says: lucky you, we wish we had as good eyes as you do.

So, topics that starts like: iPad! demise of eInk? draw attention of people for whom eInk is the only solution and they say: No way LCD based gadget can be a demise of eInk ebook reader and immediately LCD camp explodes.

See the difference?

Aren't those two Android and Windows mobile only? Besides, I have used Swype. (my main issue was that I could only use it for English and German). But it can't imagine it working very well on such a big screen, because you would have to move your hand too much. Swype is great with a stylus on a resistive touch screen no bigger than 4 inches.

Experience or opinion? I say opinion. Honestly though, villifying the LCD folks like we are the only ones who are passionate about our chosen path is silly. I've seen just as many eInk people respond in rude and blanket statements that many of us LCD people don't agree with. I guess you missed the post I responded to? Wasn't that before mine?

Do you really think thats how eInk fans always respond? Come on, you have been around here long enough to know that isn't true. I commend you on your responses to LCD fans but you are one of the few who respond like this. I've seen overall rude statemens, arguments over eye strain studies, and statements of falsehood in reply to LCD posts. I usually just don't respond to them, as you can see if you read any of my posts in the past, I rarely get involved, but claiming all of us LCD folks are a bunch of whiners doesn't sit well either.

I certainly wouldn't post something like that, especially when I know the answer already. eInk has its place with folks that like dedicated readers and long battery life. People who like to sit outside and read in full sunlight. I'm sure there are some folks who like LCD who feel this is a measure of payback for ignoring the possibilities and promoting mostly eInk on this site for years. Some eInk fans feel especially threatened by the emerging LCD tablets.

Before you posted about my comments, did you bother to read the post I responded to?

That was the inflaming statement, but I'm sure you don't see it that way. Come on. Be fair about it.

E-Ink or LCD. No problem if you are passionate about your choice. But sometimes I find that missionary zeal to convert and convince others of the superiority of whatever product one prefers quite annoying. Everyone is different, different eyes, different lighting conditions, different preferences, etc. Let us just accept that some prefer LCD and some prefer e-ink and move on.

We can discuss the details of the devices, but rehashing "it hurts my eyes", "you just haven't adjusted the backlighting" "yes, I have", etc is getting quite boring.

I'm with you HansTWN. This is MobileRead! Not LCDRead or EiNkWorld. Let's talk about reading on all devices and stop the madness!

As a stand alone statement, yes.
As a reply to:
Quote:
But one can still compare the reading experience on a tablet to that on an e-ink e-reader etc., and talk about the various pros and cons to reading on both types of devices etc.
No. Because for eInk camp, there can be no comparison, because our eyes cannot do it, so anything that is not eInk is not ebook reader for US. Not for everybody.
So, how my physical inability to enjoy LCD based gadgets, can be the inflaming statement?
If you discuss it in a topic where you compare oranges and oranges, for example iPad and tablets, or netbook and I pop in to this topic and start to flame LCD, then you could say it is inflammatory statement. Otherwise, what do you expect in a general thread that was posted for all readers, including eInk fans?

Frankly speaking I am not sure you are genuinely asking this question.
Because I cannot understand what is so difficult in understand this simple fact:
I cannot read on LCD based devices. It doesn't make them bad or good. I just cannot even compare them. So, for me they are not ebook readers. Just like for some people who cannot stand page turn speed of eInk devices, don't use them at all because the speed is unacceptable. However, if you don't want to hear from eInk fans that they dismiss iPad as ebook reader then don't start such a topic in a general forum, start it in iPad forum.

I repeat myself. I better stop. Either you got my point by now, or there is no chance.

But as I also said, maybe some others will be fine with virtual keyboards and learn to do heavy typing work on them. I could live to be 500 and I can guarantee that I'll still be typing on a physical keyboard. 100% a case of "if it's not broke, don't fix it!" for me.

But virtual keyboards are more than adequate for briefer typing.
The most I've typed are forum messages. But I do find that I can even type in the car.

I get your point astra, I really do. At the same time I don't think you folks have anything to worry about - eInk isn't going anywhere. Yes, LCD is rising in popularity, and it should. What set me off was the word "dismiss." You simply can't dismiss a device that has sold over 2 million units in as many months that has put a huge mark in ebook sales. I don't own an iPad and never will, but even I can see that.

Anyhow lets get back to the fun discussion of reading on devices!
