DR800 Buying adventure

I have a BeBook. I ended up depending on it every single day. I take it to the restaurant, when I travel and I read it in bed.

Yesterday it broke down. So I started to see what other reader I should buy. I wanted a bigger screen, but not as big as Kindle DX and certainly not tied to Amazon. After much searching, I decided that iRex DR800 was the one: not too bulky, ePub DRM capable, and no glare. It is pricy, but what a hell. Little did I know my adventure was about to begin.

I am Portuguese, but I teach in Brazil. Previously I lived in London. Is this important? It seems so. I tried for hours to buy the damn thing without any success. Best Buy only ships to the USA. And they are the only sellers in the USA. Tick that one off, then. Europe, here I go. Alas, no European store I could understand ships to Brazil, and even those I did not fully understand do not ship to Brazil. Amazon UK doesn’t. iRex shop itself does but… it does not accept any of my credit cards, neither my PayPal. I wrote them to ask what is going on, and I am still waiting for a reply.

I will keep you posted. It is turning out to be an adventure to give a company more than 600 dollars, for something the same company sells for 400 dollars in the USA. This is global economy I guess.

Any ideas anyone?

i agree, i don't understand it either. moreover, the European version is less equipped then the US version. therefore i bought mine in the US.

oh, I could sing a song about not being able to buy an iRex DR800 (and I live in Europe - but not EU) - it took me 10 days to finally find somebody in Europe who would sell the device to me, but they absolutely refused to take my credit card or accept a PayPal payment. So I did it the difficult way, made a bank transfer, waited another 2 weeks for the reader to arrive (customs took a while), but now I'm happy, reading on it every day (wondering if it really had to be THAT expensive - but oh what the hell

) and, honestly, I look back on the trials and tribulations of acquiring it with a smile

what I wanted to say is: don't lose hope

Ok, it's in dutch, don't know if there is an english version of the website.
It seems they are willing to sen it to Brazil.

The advantage of a dutch seller is that the irex is built in the Netherlands so they should have no problem with availabilty.
I bought mine just of the shelf in my dutch town at

They have also a webshop but also in dutch.

If the main problem is availability, maybe someone (In the US preferable - lot cheaper to buy it) can simply order it and send it trough to you?
There are even company's who are specialised in this - not sure about Brazil, but for the EU they exist.

Why don't you put a request on the flee market? Maybe a US forum member will buy it for you and send it to you? You can let him/her make 5% or so?

That did work for me, I bought it through a company in the US that provides US addresses to people like us wanting to buy US restricted goods. However, BestBuy has a policy not to ship to these companies. (Then again, how complete is their list?). That is why ordered mine from CarToys, but now only BestBuy seems to be left as the only US seller.

I had a similar runaround when I bought mine - credit card kept getting rejected despite the fact that I live in the EU, but I have UK credit cards registered to my Danish address, which seemed to be the problem. I eventually paid by bank transfer.

You could try Libresco, they were very helpful when I talked to them and seemed willing to ship anywhere. Only drawback is they'll only sell you the European one.

Wednesday morning, I came to the office with the hope of some reply from iRex. None. Duh. And then lots of wonderful people who are getting no money from me give me their time and tips. Strange world we live in.

Thank you, thank you all very much for the great tips. I will now follow some of them. I will let you know daily how this works out.

Don't know what currency you want to buy in, but the pound is so crap at the moment compared to most currencies that buying in sterling might actually be a good deal for you.

Libresco does not ship to Brazil. Ebookreaderstore.nl... does not also. Alas, they only found that out after I paid them, so now I am hoping they give me my money back.

Meanwhile, a very friendly forum member living in the USA offers me the trouble of buying and sending it to me. That seems to be the only option left!

You can't even find them in the US. Best buy stopped selling it on their webpage. All that is there is an Irex ad with no date as to when it will be available. I have seen a few on ebay that will ship internationally, but they are asking a price premium.

The drama thickens. Either iRex is out of stock, or else they are pulling from their exclusive contract with Best Buy. Yesterday they were selling it, today it is gone. No date, no info, nothing. Oh well.

Edit: Ebookreaderstore.nl really is a great company. They issued my refund and it is already in my PayPal account. Great!

I have bought a month ago my Irex DR800S from http://www.ebookreaderstore.de/ after paying over/with Visa. They are, I think, the same firm (although .de not .nl) but more for international customers.
Have patience, this e-reader is the right one for reading books, especially if you - sometimes - wish a little larger letters.
