Remuneration

I'm sure this has been broached, and I'm just not clever enough to find it here, so bear with me.

I've got a couple ebooks (epub & mobi) built at my site
http://home.comcast.net/~brewt.blacklist/site/
which aren't the worst things I've seen. A modicum of success, as it were.

I've built some others that I have sent off to various authors of their works, and I was pleased to make it all for them, gratis. The authors in question were mostly astonished and grateful.

I have had some people, tho, approach me to build something for them of their writings.

Is anyone charging for such services? (some of the aforementioned people have offered to pay, and wanted to know what I'd charge.) I have no idea what this would be worth. I know the general consensus around here is that it should all just be free anyway, and why ask anything else.

But for my own gratification, comments appreciated.

I did find this guy, but don't know what success he's having:

Okay, that doesn't answer your question-- I just like your avatar.

Thanks - Card III is typically perceived to contain two humans involved in some interaction, and may provide information about how the subject relates with other people (specifically, response latency may reveal struggling social interactions).

If you meant "remuneration", I think the subject line is not a good ad for your book creation abilities.

Over at Smashwords.com, Brewt, you'll find that they keep a list of folks willing to help out those authors struggling with formatting. From what I gather, it's quite independent of Smashwords itself and they take no cut for putting author and technician together. As I recall, the suggested fee is pretty modest; about $30 or $40 a pop, I think. Good luck. Neil

My gawd, you're RIGHT! Thank you for taking care of me!

Never said I was actually any good at this. Maybe that means I CAN make some dough!

Thanks to you, too, Neil. It's nice to know that my time might actually be worth something, even if I never charge/collect. If I get any better at it, I might look into it.

Apparently, tho, the ISBN rules and costs will probably preclude me from registering myself or anything I've built for money. $125-$185 per title per format for just the number at https://www.myidentifiers.com/ (the US identifier service), on top of whatever publishing service costs, it never ends.

Don't worry, Brewt. My own technical partner is absolutely brilliant, but English isn't his first language, so he's prone to the odd wee typo in an informal email or forum post. Doesn't matter a damn; we have an editorial side to see to dotting the eyes and crossing the knees ... the main thing is that when it comes to the nuts and bolts, he knows his onions better than anyone I've ever come across. It's all about horses for courses. Good luck. Neil

***I like your site, Neil. How's your success?***

Thanks, Brewt. Well, apart from the odd outburst of unbridled metaphor-mixing (as above), we don't do too badly for a small, ferociously indie house, and our authors eat well. Mind you, it's taken ten years of hard slog even to reach our modest level. What's important at this stage of the game, though, is that we kept our promises, our reputation's in tact, we root for some of the greatest new talent around ... and we still have plenty growing space. Cheers. Neil

Sorry, Neil, I just can't resist being tactless, or hoisting you with your own petard.

Yeah, OK, Alex -- but if you were working on a keyboard the size of a matchbox and with a wifi connection from hell, you'd be forgiven, too. Hoots. Neil
