One of the best known songs by Prince is 1999. He really got the name wrong. It should have been 21. You see, the song has the line I'm gonna party like it's 1999. If you're after a party animal number, that number is 21. Nothing parties like 21. It's no co-incidence that a twenty-first party can be one of the, um, most party-ish parties around. And when 21 gets started, there's no stopping it. (I suspose this is no surprise, given that 21 is a product of a pair of primes.)

Mmmm. I don't think this explanation is particularly clear. How best to explain? Hmmm. I think an example you can relate to is called for... Let's see...

Okay.

Apparently, one day, Pshrynk and Adrian accidentally (at least according to what Pshrynk told the police the following morning) ended up in London where Adrian flagged down 21 and decided that the three of them should "have a good time". Needless to say, 21 was more than happy with this. We're not sure exactly what happened(*), but there was in interesting spike in the profits of an eclectic mix of establishments, distilleries and brewers.

What we do know is that at about 11:30pm Pshrynk was found lying face-up in a gutter quoting Oscar Wilde and doing a karaoke rendition of "The only way is up" (much to the distress of local cats and dogs) whilst reprising the dancing lying down scene from the movie Gregory's Girl.

At about 2am, in a little bar near Villiers Street, the barman reported that Adrian said "Nnnfg Hmmnsgf grllg zzzgrda frd grrllnccc.." before falling off the barstool and into a catatonic slumber. Adrian then proceeded to vaporate on his third snore (which is just as well as the first two snores came close to causing structural damage).

21, we are told, said "Well; I thought they had more stamina," and then proceeded to becon over a couple of French Tourists, and the group then headed off in search of people with more stamina.

The following day, several nightclubs and the Ritz started refurbishment programs.

This is probably slightly unfair on 21, as mostly, 21's parties are somewhat less excessive, but it must be said that 21 does like a challenge. It has also been said, though the author sadly cannot verify it, that those born on a 21st are gifted a small part of 21st love of life and vivacity.

Which leads nicely to another part of 21's character that is often overlooked. Generosity. 21 is always willing to share. Perhaps this is part of the party ethos -- who knows. 21 has also never been known to hold a grudge, or for that matter even get really angry.

All in all, a fun number, but do take care lest the parties get out of hand...

(*) Subsequent investigation has suggested that Adrian and Pshrynk engaged in a drinking game with 21, but overlooked that fact that, since 21 is a number, it has no liver, or indeed any organs, and so alcohol has a somewhat limited effect on it.

That's all a lie! It was a rather poignant and touching rendition of Busby Berkely's Follies of '31 that, due to a rather unfortunate lack of vertical enhancement abilities, had to be done lying down. The dog urine was all a part of the homage to Greta Garbo's critique of the disastrous Follies of '30.
