I definitely did not "get" Catcher in the Rye. The ending made it a little better, but I think I would have been better off reading that at 16.

Trying to decide now if I want to read The Secret History by Donna Tartt or Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt next.

The Secret History was very good. I didn't read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, though I think I saw a movie by that name.

I've been trying to determine which of the Discworld novels I read. I took out all those I could find on my bookshelves and added them to my library on Librarything, but there are still holes. I started reading Pratchett at a time I was traveling a lot, and I tended to leave books in hotels or airports after I had finished them to avoid too much clutter at home. There are several that I'm pretty sure I read, but don't seem to have any longer.

Anyway, it does look like I never read the first one, The Colour of Magic. Hmmmm...

The first one is one of his best - comedy wise.
Plus - it never hurts to re-read Pratchett - his characters keep popping up in different books - and it's fun to find them out of their "proper" sub-series.

Hey ChickenBear-

Did you know the Penguin retired to Costa Rica?

That's another avatar you've chased out of here. He's probably in some bar right now, crying in his beer to his new friend, Sparky!

Opps! thought I was in another thread! Better get back on topic before anyone notices!

Currently reading 59 Seconds by Richard Wiseman. Fascinating as all get-out!

An unusual sort of self-help book written by a researcher into the small nooks and crannies of life normally overlooked.

Among other things, he says:
- if you want to buy happiness, spend your money on experiences, not possessions.
- scientifically speaking, if you want to help yourself, help others.
- smiling is not only a sign of happiness, it's a cause.
- one of the best ways to convince people of anything is to tell about your pet frog.

Oh yes, great book. The other two in the series are also great; I read all three a couple of weeks or so ago.
