So, is the issue not being able to fly "the flag" as the title of this thread has it, or is the issue curtailment of freedom of expression, an idea emerging from the European Enlightenment - not dreamed up by the Founding Fathers - which has only ever been implemented subject to certain constraints.

As a veteran who served a tour and a half in Vietnam, I love the United States of America. I have flag symbols at work, and fly the Stars and Stripes on all the patriotic holidays. And whenever I'm somewhere the Pledge of Allegiance is sworn, my voice is the loudest in the room.

...except when it comes to that 2-word bastard phrase, added in the 50s, that has artificially divided Americans ever since it was first incorporated. Then my voice goes noticeably silent until it passes.

There's nothing wrong with the way that old socialist, Rev. Francis Bellamy, wrote the Pledge. It hardly needed the "improvement" of the U.S. Congress in 1954.

We aren't saying that the idea was originally the founding fathers (who were, by descent and would have been by choice under other circumstances, European) what we are saying is that those same founding fathers fought and died to found the country in which we currently have the right to display this and many other flags, unrestrained.

I'd be interesting to know if any of the founding fathers owned rental properties, and if they did, if they had set standards for what the renters could do and not do with the property.

No idea as to the answer of that. But plenty of them had no problem owning people.

Wonder if Jefferson's slaves were encouraged to hang flags of their choice?

Alright, at this point I would like to be certain that we are not going to bring slavery into the topic. THIS IS NOT THE TIME OR PLACE FOR THAT DISCUSSION.

In response to your wondering however, I can't answer that. I don't know that renting was a popular idea at the time. I would imagine not as there was a fair amount of available land (and we aren't going to bring THAT into this discussion either, it was just the way I find things to be perceived at the time.)

I find the death threats and insults the owner of the apartment complex received much more offensive than him having a say on what can and cannot be publicly displayed in his property.

Just my 2 centimos.

Nope, you don't, but this isn't the place for that conversation, and we all have the responsibility of making sure that conversations do stay relatively on topic and don't enter into topics that are most likely to get the thread locked.

I never understood that myself (and somehow my scouts always got printouts of the older pledge... hmmmmm....)

But not if the owner of the property on which you want to fly your flag, or any other flag, doesn't want you to, which seems to be what happened here.
