I saw a documentary on Oasis about ground squirrels attacking snakes. Some rabbits live underground. I would think this one to be a parent protecting the nest.

I think it is the breed of chicken that causes the reaction. I believe they are doorman chickens and we all know if you get a bit carried away at the hop the doorman steps in............

the one in front is a rooster. They are ferocious fighters and fight to death.
