1) because apple's OS was junked long ago and they run one of the most closed forms of linux
2) people are already hacking the kindle 3) apple is no longer the counter culture thing anymore it has a market cap bigger than microsofts! I have no doubt that apple can design a good product..however it's just the design not the product itself. with my dx I know no one would grab it to surf the web..I'm sure anyone would grab the apple ipad to surf the web or play games etc. costwise dx gives you 3G...ipad doesn't yet...I'm not saying web surfing on a dx is great but to check email and do it free its pretty good. Being able to read outside is also good and the battery life. Let's say you go to a more remote area...ok now what..say they don't have power all the time..probably no wifi...what do you do now? |

Hmmm .... good point! And I guess if you must read on an iPad, you may as well read on a laptop or a cheaper netbook.

If Overdrive's forthcoming iPad app allows you to load your own eBooks, then the iPad will have come into it's own as the Overdrive app is going to be using Adobe's ADE SDK version 9. So really, it has the potential to blow away iBooks.

Just checked out an iPad. I don't know how anyone can get down to reading on these things with all those zillions of distractions. That aside, it's basically a glitzy laptop with a sawed off keyboard.

I like it - a lot. But it's too heavy for me to conveniently hold it for hours. Same for Kindle DX or iRex 1000 (which actually isn't that heavy, but too bulky). |

I have an iPad and a Kindle DX.
I much prefer reading on the Kindle DX. Yes, the iPad has a bit more "wow" factor when turning pages, and it has colour. However it is heavy, slippery if not in a cover, I experience eye strain after a short period of time (even if I dim the display), the battery does not last long enough on the the road. As all my books are in MOBI format converting to EPUB is a pain. It does not have a native PDF reader. iTunes is a PITA. Last but not least, it is a VERY closed and controlled platform. The Kindle DX is simple, easy to use, easy to copy content to, can operate standalone if you want, and is significantly cheaper (in Australia anyway). My recommendation: If you want to read books even PDFs the Kindle/Kindle DX wins hands down over the iPad. If you want to surf the web, read e-mail, and read the odd book, buy a net book. At least it will be able to multi-task and be cheaper. |

Everytime someone compares eink and LCD, and tells me that eink is just monochrome and slower so "why should i want that", i just laugh.. If glaring LCD doesn't make your eyes ache after 10 hours and u still wanna read on it for another 4, than ur happy man, but.. my eyes were good too, some time ago. Now i'm really glad for a book. or kindle

are people really reading big technical manuals on the dx? by no native pdf on the ipad do you mean you pay a buck or something to get a pdf app that you can actually use? or do you mean you cannot read pdf's period on the ipad? |

The thing that gets to me somewhat with technology is people tend to pay more for more features that they might not always use. Now hardware isn't something that can be a la cart but just consider how far we've come.
10 years ago pda's went from b&w to color...the only problem at the time was the color was well...poor. reduced battery life so the gain wasn't much. Yes one can make the argument towards a color e book reader but honestly outside of a book cover and a graphic novel I don't see THAT much of a gain. I think it could be possible that amazon could release a touch screen with a next kindle but they are probably keeping a keen on on how the screens on the ipad turn out. Touch screens are no problem to make but the applications of them aren't always the best...palm did quite a bit on this but you used a stylus...not fingers (for the most part).... there's nothing wrong with the ipad but with any invention just think of what the primary purpose is...when items attempt to achieve a secondary or third purpose it does not always work as well as what is intended..i.e. toaster ovens and instant coffee ![]() |

Colour, touch screens, and apps aside, the basic eReader concept with functionality that can address a wide range of user interests still has some way to go. The Bebook Neo/Onyx Boox 60 I feel is possibly moving ereaders in right dirrection.
For me personally, I'd like an ereader with eInk, 9.7 inch screen, full PDF functionality plus support for a wider range of formats (HTML, CHM, DJVU, EPUB), and standard WiFi. I have no interest in touch screens. |

I read large technical documents on my Kindle DX. It is the main reason I purchased it. I can not read these documents on the iPad, as I suffer eye strain using it. As to the iPad I purchased it to demonstrate Web Applications to clients on a tablet. It does this well. Not very happy with the rest of it though. I am happy with the Kindle not being a touch screen. The Kindle is what it is. It does not bother me using physical buttons. Also if Amazon did implement a touch screen there are two main ways. Finger touch which would add a layer over the top of the eInk, with the very real possibility of adding to glare. Or a tablet interface such as Wacom that would require a pen. What they have now works and works well. Why mess with it just because Apple has a touch screen on a multifunction device? In technology it is important to remember just because you can do something, should you? |
