I beg your pardon. That wasn't my intention. I'm not angry. My attention was elsewhere.
As a minority of one, I tend to speak for myself.
As to the thread, what I was trying to say is my mother lives in a community with the same rule in place. 200 homes. Over half with flags of assorted varieties. It is a 55 and older community with alot of veterans, their widows and parents of soldiers. A neighbor decided to put up an American flag to celebrate her son's return. She was told to take it down because it was against the rules. She pointed out the other flags, and was told one person objected. She objected to all the flags. Now her flag flies too. Rule changed.

Yes I think home owners associations are inherently fascist. If someone wants to fly a flag or put up too many Christmas lights or paint their house blue instead of white, let them and if it turns out looking tacky well then they're the ones who look bad not you. But since no one in this thread was saying not to the post came off... well anyway my mistake thank you for explaining.

Thumbs down

They chose to rent there. No one forced them. They have to obey the rules of their rental agreement. You don't want to have restrictions on what you do, pay more attention before you sign a rental agreement, join a co-op, or buy in a gated community.

Tempest in a teapot. Another fool who thinks "the rules" don't apply to them just because they are a veteran. And no, serving in the military doesn't make them more American than anyone else here or entitle them to disregard the community rules that they agreed to by renting in that community. Same sort of story turns up in the news every Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans' Day.

I am in Australia and a citizen under the Crown (i.e. not a rebel like you lot). We don't go overboard with loyalty like you do in your country, however we allow people to fly the Australian flag in any which way they desire, even wearing it on Australia Day (when the British first landed here back in 1788).
We just have the good taste not to go crazy over it generally. Few houses fly it as a result, and we don't get upset so much about it as to tell people when they can or can't use it.
It's just a symbol after all. If you really want to get upset, get upset about the problems of your country and deal with those instead; make your country more than the sum of it's symbols.
Poverty and lack of education would be good things to begin with.

Okay, let's see if this clarifies the problem:
In this country you could hang
a picture of Josef Stalin,
a picture of Charles Manson, or
any Nation's flag without fear. If someone complained, you could sue them and win. Freedom.
The flag of this Nation is losing that same protection.
Thanks in part to the people who are creating the other problems brought up.
You would agree, it is kind of disturbing.

Flying a flag from a ship tells you where it comes from when you're on the high seas or in a foreign port. These flags serve a useful purpose as would a flag patch on an official uniform. I'm clueless what purpose is served by flying one over a Walmart. What message is being sent and what does it imply about people who aren't flying a flag? Does a flag over walmart mean they're a governemnt building does the corporation own us? Could i vote for target and then the get the flag?

The problem is I see a flag as a useful tool like a pencil.
you're just not real clear on the by and for the people bit are you? it's our flag. a lot of us are proud of it. proud to display it.

I've rented very few times in my life and only once at an apartment. I don't recall reading every single word in the 15 odd pages of the rental agreement. like I said before, some things are just a "given" like you really don't mess around with people's right to respectfully display the flag. there are probably parking garages out there that reserve the right to bar you due to the stickers you might have on your car and folks don't know about it. there are some things that people need a huge reality check over. this would be one of them

Do you mess with people's right to disrespectfully display it? Maybe it should be you don't mess with someone's first amendment rights.

That's two errors - you don't read through agreements that legally bind you before you sign them, and you assume things are a "given" when they are not. If one does that, then one shouldn't be surprised when their legal contract bites them on the ass, or their assumption is proven wrong.

The flag is merely a symbol, not a holy object. Too many people misuse it to display false patriotism when their actions indicate that they have no true understanding of the basic reasons why America was founded. And some use it for intimidation purposes. I can understand why a housing authority might restrict its display. That's not to say I agree with their restrictions, only that I understand why they would do so.

I don't believe that's the issue with the situation in the OP. The veteran doesn't own the property. We have freedom of speech in this country, but if someone posts a flyer or sign on my property and I don't agree with it, I have the right to take it down. If I want to fly a flag on my property, I have the right, unless I signed that right away by agreeing to an associations rules.

I don't agree with their rule, but the property owner has the right to say not to fly a flag and I certainly don't want the government stepping in changing that.

In the case in question - the owners were swayed by public opinion to change the rule.

No one is more patriotic than used car dealers. They even stick American Flags on foreign cars!

Just to set the record straight, the flag in question is not the American flag but The Blue Star Service Flag.
