I played with it for a while before setting up collections and found that book adds and deletions only took a few seconds, so clearly, there's something inefficient in the collections coding.

I believe you're right. I didn't bother with implementing any of the updated features for over a week after I got it. Before setting up the folders a few days ago, the addition/deletion of books was as it was in the previous update.

Creating even the image of a split in their user base is not a smart move by Amazon. Up until this point Amazon has always seemed to be at least trying to do the right thing by me, but this just feels poorly thought-out. You don't make a grand announcement of the addition of the single most hotly requested feature, then inexplicably ensure that it'll stay out of the hands of 80% of your customers until most of the enthusiasm evaporates and is replaced by frustration, or simple "whatever."

...unless you're feeling insecure about the sales of the iPad and feel the need to grandstand a bit prematurely?
Can I quote you on another forum? You've hit the nail on the head--dead center

Good luck with that. On Amazon forum there are some kindle vigilantes who stick their knife into anyone remotely criticising the way the release has been handled. I just hope they are the last ones to get the update. Not that they would ever admit that.

How is this done? I located Preferences/Sending to device, but do not know what magic words to type in the field.

Thank you!

Ah...we were looking in the wrong place. Go to Preferences/Plug-Ins/Device Interface plugins/(select the appropriate Kindle plug-in). Click on Customize Plugin and uncheck "Use sub directories". I also changed the Save Template to just {title} - {authors}

BTW, if you uncheck "Read metadata from device", your Kindle will load in about 6 seconds instead of a minute or two.

elmoglick,

Fantastic - just what I was looking for! I would have spent hours trying to figure it out (without success, most likely). Thanks also for the tip on unchecking "read metadata from device."

Thank you again and karma!

Actually, it was your post in the Calibre forum that got the response from AnemicOak with the suggestion. I just shared it here.

I'll send along some Karma to him from both of us.

Frustrations??? Well, it's the 27th of May and tomorrow is when all *dedicated* US party animals start their four-day weekend celebrating Memorial Day. Which means that there's a *great* chance that *NO* work will be done to complete the "let's get the K2s (US) updated before the end of May" process. Neither of my K2(US) Kindles have been updated. Way. To. Go. Amazon! (Not!)

The latest...

"Kindle Version 2.5 Overview

We know Kindle customers are anxious to receive the 2.5 software update, so we wanted to provide you with some details about its status. We've rolled out the 2.5 software release to a set of Kindle customers and have received great feedback from these early customers. Based on this feedback, we are making some small adjustments to improve the experience further. We will be rolling out the 2.5 software update to more users over the coming weeks."

Looks like the end of May is no longer the target.
