Well I don't know if anyone besides me brought it up explicitly, but it was the most obvious anti-american position I could think of. And the anti-american position was the very thing that laid the foundation of the first many posts in this thread. But it might as well be mexican or anyone else. That's really besides the point, since we are in agreement that it is indeed a question of corporate greed and not much else.

Unfortunately very few people read the Wealth of Nations (the book on which our economic system has been based). (And to be completely honest I've had the book for a year now and haven't been able for force my way through it.) However, there is a very important bit in there, towards the beginning, where it talks about the moral responsibilities of the people in charge, as well as the moral responsibilities of the customers. Essentially, as a business owner you should hold yourself accountable to your most faithful clientele, not the customers who will only stay for a while. And as a client, you shouldn't spend your money somewhere that does not hold beliefs you disagree with. In that way, the majority consumer is in control of the market.

But that is at the same time describing a totalitarian system, where the only thing that goes is the common denominator. Is that really what you want. Do you fit that denominator in all respects of your life?

Sorry about the misunderstanding concerning my post. Very bad technical difficulties on my end.
I do not believe the President is a noncitizen. I was trying to say that it appears that some of his supporters look upon the nation that elected him as the enemy. I have been accused of being a warmonger and worse for wearing a flag pin and standing for the Anthem.
And they are cancelling Memorial Day parades.
I always fly the flag. I listen to Sean Hannity.

But you're a scary green recluse...

Seriously, why didn't the people in the story call the ACLU instead of Fox News? Or at least in addition to Fox News. It sounds like a civil rights issue.

good question. sometimes when you are at the center of a fray, you reach out to anyone who will listen to you. maybe they had made that contact and didn't feel their words were being heard

The "US flag" part of the issue is a red herring. The article states that the rule applies to any flags or religious symbols. The real issue isn't "Anti-Americanism"-- it is allowing your freedoms to be limited by Home Owner's Associations and property management. The rules were probably laid out in the contract that he signed to live on the property, and he signed it anyway.

Edit-- an article updating the story:

not necessarily. quite often people read those things and think oh surely they don't mean the flag! they're just trying to make sure the confederate flag and other things don't get put up!!!

If the rule says "no flags", I'd think it means "no flags", not "no flags except for whichever one I have an emotional attachment to." I don't agree with the policy-- but I don't see how it could be "some flags are okay, but others are not." (FWIW, being in South Carolina, Confederate flags are far from an uncommon site for me.)

The issue, I think, is one of some having an exceptionalist view of the US flag so close to their core identity that they take it for granted that the view is universal.

That is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. If you have some deep seated loathing for the flag, don't fly it. I am proud to be an American, I can fly the flag if I want to. When I want to. No harm in that. That's the price of Freedom.

Hmm, I guess I'm in the distinct minority here. I don't know how it is in the states, but up here in Canada it's very common for rental properties (and strata condos too!) to have covenants about street side uniformity. For example, the street facing side of our blinds or curtains must be white or cream. No large structures are permitted on the balconies. No clothing can be draped over railings or dried on the balcony, etc. You will see flags pop out for Canada Day or during the recent Olympics, but generally hanging a flag in your window in place of, or in front of your drapes would be major no-no since it disrupts the uniformity of the building.

It's not a PC thing here, it just the aesthetics of rental living. I.e. bland and uniform.

Of course, I have a friend who lives in Duluth outside of Atlanta in a community of strata houses. Being a lover of Canada as well as his native USA, he put a Canadian flag on his flagpole for Canada Day. Several irate neighbors complained to the community association, saying it was disrespectful to fly anything other than a US flag.

Well, he is staying in Duluth. I've lived there, the neighbors complain if your short-haired cat has whiskers too long.

ardeegee, For us the flag is a symbol that goes beyond regular rules. I understand that the rule should and would be interpreted as "no flags what-so-ever." But we, as Americans, believe that the American Flag should not be subject to such restrictions as it is arguably the most important symbol of our nation.
