A Midnight Clear by William Wharton sounds like a great "War" book. A good war book should (for me anyway) tell the story of people, and how war affects and effects them.

War stories don't have to be glorious. and about heroes.

No one, for instance, can deny that "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is a truly great "War" story.

Just got done going through a box of pbooks and thought of this thread. A couple of these aren't fiction books, but their quite good if you like the non-fiction side of things too.

Hell In A Very Small Place: The Siege Of Dien Bien Phu by Bernard Fall

All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque

Panzer Battles by Major-General F. W. von Mellenthin

This Kind of War by T.R. Fehrenbach

The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara

Combat Medic: Vietnam by Craig Roberts

Just picked up Steve's book and look forward to checking it out.

I read through the thread and was surprised that no one mentioned any of the Shaara family books. I love Jeff Shaara. The Rising Tide is one of my all time favorites

Blast! That's cheaper than I paid. ($12.99 during the price wars)

But, it's worth it. The fictional characters are just as real as the real ones. If that makes sense

That exactly what I like. If you don't care about the characters the book is NOT going to be good.

The people I go to for price and (ebook) alaivability is AddALL Ebook price comparison.

Just a warning to anyone who might be thinking of getting Matterhorn from Amazon. It's a Topaz book. I'm returning mine and will get it from Sony or B&N instead.

It wasn't even a war book really.

The only scene in the book that I can recall is where they push an unpopular guy in front of a machinegun that is firing blanks. No, that's not funny but the book overall was very funny.

Well, we all lose things as time goes by. Books, memory, and books too.

Was it "How I Won the War" by Patrick Ryan? I haven't read the book but I saw the movie with John Lennon.

The one I read was a British book written in the '50s or very early '60s. It took place during training in England and ended at the end of there training.

I'm pretty sure that anyone old enough to have read it when it came out is too old to remember much more than I do.
