Sad to say but that's not it.

Young solders in training - yes.
Virgin solders - yes.
Love interest - yes.
I read it back in the late ‘60s – yes.
Singapore - no.

It wasn't even a war book really.

The only scene in the book that I can recall is where they push an unpopular guy in front of a machinegun that is firing blanks. No, that's not funny but the book overall was very funny.

Well, we all lose things as time goes by. Books, memory, and books too.

Hmmm, another wild guess - 'Ginger, You're Barmy' by David Lodge.

Hi warmongers, forget for a moment your quest for SOS

Try this old book that made Alistair McLean a writer.. HMS Ulysses, a tale of heroes.
And its companion in chanting the war in the Atlantic : The Cruel Sea by Nicholas Monsarrat.

The voice of the other side is that of Lothar-Günther Buchheim that wrote the novel Das Boot (1973), which became an international bestseller and was adapted in 1981 as an Oscar-nominated film.

The movie Das Boot in German (with english subtitles) was extraordinary. I tried later to watch it dubbed in with english and just could not watch it.

The same thing happened with the movie Le Grand Blond avec une chaussure noire (The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe).

(Please don't tell anyone else the I like some movies too. Just keep it a secret between us.)

We all have good intentions of remembering the book recommendations. But we write them down or trust to our memories.

Doesn't work with me. I loose the paper or forget over time.

So here an attempt at a better solution. I'll post it elsewhere in case anyone else would like it.

Thanks y'all

Good recommendations here. Here's a couple that don't get mentioned a lot:

A Midnight Clear by William Wharton is decent yet overlooked -- set during the Battle of the Bulge and made into an equally decent movie that no one saw. Also, if anyone reads German, I suggest Die Brücke -- about teen recruits in a Bavarian town who try to hold a bridge in the last days of WWII. It's very moving but I'm not sure if there's an English version. There should be.

There are so many. I could go on.

Steve

Not At all!

A Midnight Clear by William Wharton sounds like a great "War" book. A good war book should (for me anyway) tell the story of people, and how war affects and effects them.

War stories don't have to be glorious. and about heroes.

No one, for instance, can deny that "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is a truly great "War" story.

Thanks again, Steve

Yup, I did the same thing, blasted through all the Sharpe books, and also his Anglo Saxon books all about the same time over the end of last year.

I find Cornwell to be a very compelling writer, even when he gets a little formulaic.

Now if only Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin books were available in ebook format, I'd be in heaven.

Why they aren’t out is ebook format I don’t know. I have the full set of paperbacks and they're part of the "real" books (I own them, I can sell them, I can even loan them!) that I'll keep.

Have you tried the Flashman series? If not read the first one. The guy is a total cad. And that is the best thing that you can say about him. Sony only has 3 but the others can be had also. I now have the full set both in epub and paper.
