So what are the chances...
of getting a PRS600 with the bad eInk screen? IE, the one that can't go out in the sun?

Just buy the 600, take it out in the sun and if it fades, go back to the store and keep swapping until you get one that works. You have the same chance of getting a bad screenfromany tha maker as you do Sony. The difference is that if you are local to a shop that sells the 699, you canake sure you get a good one.
