I've started a re-read of Ngaio Marsh's Inspector Alleyn mystery series - they are truly like old friends now - I find a lot more wit/humor each time I savor them.

I've been here in Alaska 11 years, and I still don't like the cold lol. My first winter here I thought I was going to literally die. Of course the fact that I moved here from Phoenix AZ didn't help much.

Just finished The Orange and the Green by GA Henty, the 19th Century English novelist. It's a fictional adventure/romance story set against a painstakingly researched factual account of the 17th Century struggle for Ireland. Anyone who believes this was a simple Catholic-v-Protestant war, will find that it's much more than that.
The book's a free download from MR and is beautifully presented -- many, many thanks to Crutledge for his hard work on this one. Highly recommended to lovers of fact-based historical fiction. Cheers. Neil |

Someone was recently telling me the female characters in it were passive and uninteresting. (Were there any female characters? I can't even remember at this point. ![]() Best, Debbi [In-text promotional links deleted - MODERATOR] Last edited by Dr. Drib; 03-10-2014 at 12:40 PM. |

And now Tea-time for the Traditionally Built by Alexander McCall Smith. Tenth in the series, but it doesn't disappoint. A quick read, but then I've been off work yesterday and today, so it's not surprising that I've finished it, and I'm now onto Second Contact by Mike Resnick. Lawyers, mysteries and aliens. Sounds good, and so far it's interesting. |

Galadriel: Elf Queen of Lothlorien. More powerful that her consort, and holder of one of the three elven rings. Eowyn: Niece of King Theoden. Rides secretly to battle with the Eorlingas. Rose Cotton: Sam's love interest. Arwen: Elrond's daughter. Aragorn's love interest. Does Shelob count? :-) And the ones I looked up: Goldberry: wife of Tom Bombadil Ioreth: a woman of Gondor Lobelia Sackville-Baggins: one of Frodo's relatives. And there might be one or two more hiding in the background. Rose and Arwen we hardly see at all. I don't see any of the others mentioned as passive and uninteresting. |

There's three important female characters, but one is mostly in the appendices (it's blink, and you'll miss her while you read). |

Now for Emissary by Fiona McIntosh. This is the second in a fantasy trilogy. The first, Odalisque, was one of Tor's free ebooks back when they were promoting tor.com. I liked it enough (in June 2009) that I bought the other two volumes, but I haven't got around to them before. Now I'll find out if I like the other two as well! |
