I've started a re-read of Ngaio Marsh's Inspector Alleyn mystery series - they are truly like old friends now - I find a lot more wit/humor each time I savor them.

Talk about out of the frying pan and into the deep freeze. At least you are getting all that foreign relations experience what living so close to Russia.

I can relate. When I returned to Virginia from Vietnam, everyone was wearing short sleeves and I was freezing.

Guess I've adapted to the cold by all the winters I've spent working nights!

Just finished The Orange and the Green by GA Henty, the 19th Century English novelist. It's a fictional adventure/romance story set against a painstakingly researched factual account of the 17th Century struggle for Ireland. Anyone who believes this was a simple Catholic-v-Protestant war, will find that it's much more than that.

The book's a free download from MR and is beautifully presented -- many, many thanks to Crutledge for his hard work on this one.

Highly recommended to lovers of fact-based historical fiction. Cheers. Neil

It was fun. Lots of monsters. Vampires that don't sparkle. Ultimate evil. Improbable Heros and heroines.

And now Tea-time for the Traditionally Built by Alexander McCall Smith. Tenth in the series, but it doesn't disappoint. A quick read, but then I've been off work yesterday and today, so it's not surprising that I've finished it, and I'm now onto

Second Contact by Mike Resnick. Lawyers, mysteries and aliens. Sounds good, and so far it's interesting.

I re-read them a few years ago and was surprised to find that there was indeed one female character. She must have got at least 1 page in all of the three volumes But she was interesting. Trying to get some action while her father wanted her safe at home and taking care of the weary warriors. A very conflicted and frustrated character. I felt for her.

Maybe there were others, but she's the only one I remember.

Not many. here are the ones I remember:

Galadriel: Elf Queen of Lothlorien. More powerful that her consort, and holder of one of the three elven rings.
Eowyn: Niece of King Theoden. Rides secretly to battle with the Eorlingas.
Rose Cotton: Sam's love interest.
Arwen: Elrond's daughter. Aragorn's love interest.

Does Shelob count? :-)

And the ones I looked up:
Goldberry: wife of Tom Bombadil
Ioreth: a woman of Gondor
Lobelia Sackville-Baggins: one of Frodo's relatives.

And there might be one or two more hiding in the background.

Rose and Arwen we hardly see at all. I don't see any of the others mentioned as passive and uninteresting.

I found I liked them a lot more because I was much better equipped to appreciate the prose than I was as a teenager. I also now know a lot more about the mythological background material Tolkien used. And back then I read translation of course.

There's three important female characters, but one is mostly in the appendices (it's blink, and you'll miss her while you read).

Well, the action was fun, but the ending was a bit of a let-down.

Now for Emissary by Fiona McIntosh. This is the second in a fantasy trilogy. The first, Odalisque, was one of Tor's free ebooks back when they were promoting tor.com. I liked it enough (in June 2009) that I bought the other two volumes, but I haven't got around to them before. Now I'll find out if I like the other two as well!
