Yes I have the 2.3.3 software version. How do I know if it is a US version, I purchased mine Feb. 2010.

It is no wonder that there are so many virus infected PCs in the world. Some unknown person puts a file up on the internet and hundreds of folks grab it and try to install it.

The Kindle upgrade is not important enough to not wait for an official release.

I don't think, there's any risk for the Kindle. You always can revert back.
And on the PC you're not doing anything, not even unzipping.

As far as I know, there is no practical way to revert the Kindle OS.

The point of my mini-rant is that too many folks are more than willing and eager to install an unknown piece of software for the cool factor.

The idea of this board is to be a community - the person who posted it has over 170 posts on this site - Much like purchasing things in the market there is a level of trust that I grant to people who are regulars on this site. Without a modicum of trust the very purpose of this board can not be accomplished

I'm sure the person who started this thread is a wonderful and honest person, but I don't know him.

I'm sure that all those persons who have posted that it works for them are honest, but I don't know them.

I'm happy those of you who have downloaded the bin file have a level of trust above mine.

In 32 years of computing, none of my personal machines have been compromised or have had a virus. I bet you can guess why. I don't download music. I don't download "free" software. I make sure that my virus software is up to date and I regularly scan my machines.

When Amazon releases the final release to the general public, I'll download and
update. In the meantime, I'll let the early adopters work out the problems (or not).

I have reason to believe of an international conspiracy to infect the computer of every Kindle owner or Kindle aspirant on the part of a nefarious clique of ebook haters. If you see links to a 2.6.7 update, please do not upload this bin file. As initial reports are suggesting, your Kindle will heat up and emit noxious fumes that are known to cause chronic dementia.

Hi there,

I live in Singapore and I have a US Kindle DX US version with 2.3 firmware. So updating via Whispernet is a no-no. I tried to update with the Update_233 file posted in this thread using the USB copy to root directory instructions but didn't work. The update box in my Kindle DX was still greyed out.

Can anyone please help me?

Hi Sheikspeare,

1. Downloaded this file: http://www.amazon.com/update_kindle_dx.bin

2. Connect my Kindle DX US 2.3 to the pc using it's USB cable.

3. Drag the bin file to the root directory of the Kindle DX. (Im assuming root is just the topmost directory alongside Documents and Audible folder?)

4. Ejected the KDX then disconnect it from my pc

5. From the home page turned wireless off

6. Then hit the menu button.

7. Scrolled to Settings.

8. Click on Settings.

9. From the Settings page click the menu button again.

10. In the menu Update Your Kindle abut I could not select it as it was greyed out.

Please help!

OK, you seem to be doing everything right. Can you verify the following:

(1) Is your DX definitely a US version? Verify by giving the first four digits of your serial number.

(2) What precisely is the current version of the firmware? Please provide.

(3) Do you have any hacks installed? If so, state which and uninstall.

I'll wait for you to get back to me on this.
