Remember the giant triffid that was 12ft high? Well now its about 15' high, the flowers are opening and the parrots are loving it. I just went and took a couple of snaps to share...

If only parrots were native to Tidewater! You're fortunate to have those lovely birds outside your window!

any growing tips? there is, believe it or not a flock of WILD parrots that have managed to thrive in town. they live on cellular tower and have been the cause of many arguments at the town council. somehow they manage to make it through the winter just fine. last I heard the flock was in the low 100s

not really. in 22 years this is the first year we've had any that have flowered. The only difference is that previous plantings (except the first*) were using shop bought plants. Our first planting* just given leaves, but were planted in shade of a growing tree - which might explain that. This year's treasure has come from plants we were given last year, and just thown into home made compost (after languishing in a plastic bag for a couple of weeks) - this compost made from kitchen waste and cat litter (sawdust) [whilst composting the temperature occasionally reached 60-65C]. :eeks:

Picked the first red tomato this morning. Okay, it's a grape tomato, but it's a *large* grape tomato. :>) Maria |

I have a Burpee Big Boy tomato plant. Gorgeous plant. Lots of blossoms. NOT A SINGLE TOMATO on it. Beefsteaks and big boys don't grow that well in Texas. I've tried them before. I bought this one on the rec that it would change my mind about being able to grow beefsteak/boys in Texas. So far...wrong. All my other plants have tomatoes on them. That one just sits there looking great and huge and sucking up water...
