That's the good news... the bad news is, after a week with no chlorine the pool is pretty green. So, a lot of sweeping and filter back washing in line for the weekend and beyond.

But... it was worth it to save the $300.

It sounds like you have an expensive set-up. Is it an in-ground pool? We have an 18 ft. round above-ground pool. It doesn't have a sand filter (although at one time it did), so there's never a need to backwash; and having a spare filter eliminates the wasted time between filter washings. I just pull out the dirty cartridge and slip in the clean one, then clean the dirty one and save it for the next change.

We've had a couple of pool-worthy days so far, but I didn't take advantage of them. My grandson and Norton are raring to go, but the pool needs to be cleaned up from winter first before they can come in.

hey, we do that too in france ! i love those old traditions / superstitions. it's like, you have to look the other in the eye when you knock glasses, or never light a cigarette from a candle (it kills a sailor). some of them have really pragmatic origins : it's bad luck to light 3 cigarettes from the same match... when you're a solider in WWII, because it gives the enemy time to get a good aim to shoot you.

Ciao bella! This site is brighter when you are around!

look the other in the eye when you knock glasses
so a third one can put an hand in your pocket

the 3 clops with one match, my papie told me this from the WWI. He called it La Grande Guerra.
Superstitions.

One thing, though, you should pay attention to. When you get out of the bed (la levé du corps), start with the right foot. That's already in Latin literature.

yep, me too !

Here's a southern US superstition for you.

Gardeners in the south like to give away plants that are extras. Bulbs, runners, any sort of plant that asexually multiplies without human intervention. The are called pass-along plants (I passed-along 20 crinium lilies this spring). The superstition is that you should not thank the person who passes along the plant. If you do, the plant will die....

very practical. Lovely too, it increases complicity.

In Italy a man enters through a door in some public place before the women. I think it is for an ancient form of protection. With normal doors women have right of way they deserve, of course.

hm, i usually put both feet on the floor at the same time, is that a problem ? maybe the left foot touches first sometimes since i always get out of the left side of the bed... i'm not usually awake enough to pay attention at the time.

that's a lovely tradition ! i like that. my grandmother is an excellent gardener and she is always exchanging clippings with friends to start new plants. i guess she must never say thank you because i don't think a single one of her plants has ever died.

During the day of Hogmanay the Scottish household would be busy cleaning so that the New Year could be welcomed into a tidy and neat house. It is considered ill luck to welcome in the New Year in a dirty uncleaned house. Fireplaces would be swept out and polished and some people would read the ashes of the very last fire of the year, to see what the New Year would hold. The act of cleaning the entire house was called the redding, ie getting ready for the New Year.

Pieces from a Rowan tree would be placed above a door to bring luck. In the house would be placed a piece of mistletoe, not for kissing under like at Christmas, but to prevent illness to the householders. Pieces of holly would be placed to keep out mischievous fairies and pieces of hazel and yew which were thought to have magical powers and would protect the house and the people who lived in it. Juniper would be burnt throughout the house, then all the doors of the home would be opened to bring in fresh air. The house was then considered ready to bring in the New Year.

Debts would be paid by New Year's Eve because it was considered bad luck to see in a new year with a debt.

Any visitors who arrive before the chimes of midnight on New Year's Eve would have to be violently shooed away to prevent bad luck. At midnight the man of the house would open the back door to let the old year out and then open the front door of the house to let in the new year. The household would also make as much noise as possible to scare off evil spirits. In harbours throughout Aberdeenshire, at Aberdeen Harbour and throughout the North East Sea fishermen and sailors will sound their horns and these sounds carry for miles.
