But increasingly novels I'm reading take a storyline in one time/place and then suddenly jump next paragraph into another time/place and then back again with no break? Continuity is poor and the new position isn't clearly signposted .... I'm getting too many occasions when I'm thinking, whaye ! what? where? why? how .... !

I'm sure paper books were different - usually with an extra space to break up the paragraphing ... which would suggest sloppy formatting for e-books....

Or am I imagining this ?
This is also the descendant of post-modernism -- where the narrative point of view shifts suddenly and repeatedly - both in time frames and betwixt characters. Mix in some self-referential bits, add some stream-of-consciousness, and then top with sloppy editing -- reading can become as confusing as driving in France without a map or a translator.

I believe it is just lazy formatting. The current eBook I'm reading has a nice 'flower' (I'm not sure what it's called) between breaks within a chapter.

Yes, this is what I called an icon. Maybe a more proper term would be "transitional icons"?

Stansted Airport gives me a headache and makes me a not very nice person. Did they design it with that specific purpose in mind? You know, I think they must have.

In itself having many themes and setting and characters and times, that move on their own track and some time intertwine is not a bad thing. Comes to my mind Chesapeake by Michener. But each fragment should be well written and functional to the narrative tension.

the only possible reply to this, is to quote the beginning of "the long dark tea-time of the soul" by douglas adams (i recommend the rest of it, as well) :

Quote:
It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on Earth has ever produced the expression "as pretty as an airport".

Airports are ugly. Some are very ugly. Some attain a degree of ugliness that can only be the result of a special effort. This ugliness arises because airports are full of people who are tired, cross, and have just discovered that their luggage has landed in Murmansk (Murmansk airport is the only known exception to this otherwise infallible rule), and architects have on the whole tried to reflect this in their designs.

They have sought to highlight the tiredness and crossness motif with brutal shapes and nerve jangling colours, to make effortless the business of separating the traveller for ever from his or her luggage or loved ones, to confuse the traveller with arrows that appear to point at the windows, distant tie racks, or the current position of Ursa Minor in the night sky, and wherever possible to expose the plumbing on the grounds that it is functional, and conceal the location of the departure gates, presumably on the grounds that they are not.
i feel for you. i would gladly spend the rest of my life without ever seeing the inside of another airport.

Some airports can be very nice, much nicer than the highways that cut up all the landscapes. The Denver airport is nice to my eye, but that's my view...

It's not so bad, there's an airy feeling in it somewhat like in a tent.

mmmm . looks like I'm blaming format when it could be calibre that is causing problems ....

ePub version looks okay(ish) - with an extra line where needed to separate scenes within paragraphs etc - but the Mobi conversion removes the extra line...

in french we call those decorative elements "mouche", i'm not sure of the name in english. but i agree that scenebreaks are just as important to understanding some stories as using the right word can be.

you know, my impression is that that happens a lot... it's very easy in epub to add a bit of extra space to indicate a scene break, but if this were done *properly*, with an extra padding space added to the paragraph (rather than adding an empty extra paragraph), it's quite possible that a conversion will just strip out that style. don't blame epub for that !
