Don't skimp on quality, go for the best because they're built for a lifetime of use.

Foot rest are a design flaw anyway. They always go first because they encourage putting your feet on them and they're not built like floors. Unless you wrap them with a carpet material cover, they never last. Go for leather, not too light, not too dark and you won't have problems with discoloration in creases and well used edges.

300$ is not expensive considering the time it takes to repair upholstery.
I don't know what kind of salary you're used too but figure a furniture restorer to make the same wages you do. The only way to get those prices lower is to go with asian products. That's why cabinet and furniture makers are a dying breed...
