Kobo - Firmware Delivery Method?

Has anyone read how the firmware will be delivered once updates do indeed happen? I'm assuming it will either need to be a sync function or update library and am hoping for update libary given the sync is a little obnxious right now.

Firmware is delivered through the Kobo desktop application.

My number 1 desired upgrade a delete option in the menu to make it easy to delete books if you don't have a PC available.

Key issues
- poor documentation - very little documentation (e.g. epub docs and Adobe Digital editions
- poor tech support - no answers in a week after emailing
- firmware/software issues.

1. Web -> desktop -> kobo
- very confusing - both web -> desktop and desktop -> kobo merely say "download" without stating which. Kobo itself never shows what is happening so if there are sync problems to the Kobo there is no verification. Sync to Kobo constantly re-downloads books already loaded - frequently timing out 90% loaded - which never completes. Why does desktop never show full contents (including PDF materials) of kobo.

2. Power Management - claims of 8000 page turns may be after battery conditioned, but first charge - only 800 pages - seen this complaint frequently. Second charge - never got red light on unit. Power exhaustion - the unit just freezes without warning - need battery meter every XX amount of page turns and particularly when low on charge.

3. PDF/Adobe Digital Editions - either make it work seamlessly or ditch the feature. No indication that to authenticate digital editions you must have kobo on USB and launch ADE - which will then validate the kobo - not in ANY documentation. However, font size of downloaded protected ADE books unreadably tiny with the font sizing option disabled for these documents - Hey if this is built in cooperation w Adobe - fix please!!! Can't use Calibre as can't re-size/play with the epub file due to DRM protection - could purchase $30 package to break DRM, but why? Adobe/Kobo - fix!

4. Memory Loss - had page reset to start of book twice! for no known reason (was fully charged at time). No deliberate book mark or jump to page a major limitation.

5. Line spacing option - current default for books is double space. Why? Want single space default or the ability to change. Single space alone would double battery life (if page turns is the true power consumption).

6. Eject error - eject using win 2003, win 7 always results in an error. Fix! Why is eject not part of deskop app, sync is...

It's not necessarily us needing thousands more *books* that requires this feature. I've got two reasons for wanting larger SDHC cards:

1. I have an 8GB SDHC card I haven't been able to use for anything ever since my Palm TX died. (I'd been using Dmitry's SDHC driver.) My only other SD cards are 1GB, and when I walk into the local computer shop it's getting harder and harder to even locate non-SDHC cards.

2. The Kobo can be used as a simple USB SD reader. If I've got it with me anyway, then I don't need to carry around an additional USB thumb drive too. Having more space available with the Kobo would be very useful!

We're committed to implementing PDF Reflow in an upcoming firmware release.

It might not make the first, but it's very high on our list - the only thing keeping it from being there in our first firmware release is the complexity in getting it right.

@JCKobo--nice to see you here! Are you thinking that there might be an update around the time the Borders Kobo connection launches in June?

The fact that I've seen several posts by Kobo staff is very positive. This alone has put the Kobo at the top of my current list for ebook-reader replacements of my ebookwise 1150. It's basic, does what I need and - with the suggestions I've seen in this thread fixed - does what I need in a size and at a price that works for me. All I'll miss is the backlight.

Thank you for communicating with us openly and in a timely manner! It seems rare these days.

I've had little issue with my kobo. Well I did get some but they worked out eventually. As for some people who are not very tech savvy, kobo does need some improvement.

Something needs to be fixed:
1. Fix the sylesheets.css thingie so we don't have to open up every epub file to delete it for the font size to work.

2. Being able to manage(delete) titles from the "I'm reading" list on the device is absolutely a must.

3. Being able to manage(delete) the pre-loaded books.

4. Bookmark ability. For this I really don't know why kobo doesn't have this feature because every e-book reader has it.

Something would be really nice to add on with firmware update:

1. TXT support. I know this is not a high-end device but I don't think TXT is a format requires high-end technology.

2. Multi-languages support would be a HUGE plus.

3. Have the battery bar showing on the screen all the time so we know when to charge it.

As for the PDF reflow, I don't care too much. When I set my mind on 6" screen device I already know PDF is not going to work well and I also know that the PDF reflow feature breaks the format so badly and most of them don't display well, at least for some devices I've heard. I'd rather have TXT support than PDF reflow.

I only have a few,

The desktop app needs to be fixed something similar to ADE, drag drop is the easiest.

And a way to delete or upload the freebies to your PC

Just a point, adding the free books is cool and all, but wouldn't it be better to just point people towards all the free books available on the kobo website? It would be a good marketing tool, people can go to the kobo site and get a feel for searching and downloading books from the site. Along with suggestions of other books of similar interest/genre that they could buy along the way. That way everyone can choose the freebie's they want.

I know a little off topic but I figured if there is one place the Kobo people will look on this site it's in this thread.

I'd quite like:

1) Jump to page
2) PDF Reflow

That is all

Notes on battery charge:
I'm on my first battery charge at the moment, charged it until red light came on. The battery meter never said full, and for the last four days has been fluctuating between almost empty and about 1/4 charged. I'm going to wait until the battery dies fully to give it a full charge cycle to calibrate the meter (I'm not even plugging it in to add content), only time will tell!
I'm pretty sure there's no issue with the battery. I hope not anyway, I'm in the UK and returning it would be.... impractical.

OK, if someone asked this, sorry.

I have a bit of a stupid question. When the firmware is updated how do I actually update my Kobo?

Presumably you'll have to plug into a computer via USB to load the firmware via a software updater. Obviously since there have been no firmware updates to date, no one knows for sure, but that's a general take on how any firmware gets loaded by an end-user.
