Yes, that sucks. I got it from fictionwise in February for $4.38, net, during one of their sales. That shows why I'm going to miss fictionwise!

I'm reading a very engaging novel right now. It's "Shantaram," by Gregory David Roberts.

I'm only read about 20%, but I find the writing very literary, with the characters wonderfully drawn and quite memorable.

So far, this is a superior piece of fiction.

I've wanted to read this ever since I left the U.S. and didn't want to carry this massive tome with me to Peru. Then, when I was able to buy a Kindle, I saw that the novel was available.

Highly recommended, so far. In fact, a beautiful book, so far.

Just had a superbly lazy Sunday lunch out on the terrace and flopped out for an hour to finish a re-read of George Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London (a free download from MR -- and beautifully produced). I'm glad I did. It's a supreme piece of hands-on investigative journalism with, every few pages, that cool Orwellian literary twist. And it reminded me of something I'd quite forgotten ... this sorry tale is set well within my own lifetime. I walked past Orwell's characters in the street. I stopped and talked to them. They were as familiar to me as a kid as my neighbours are now. Highly recommended, folks. Cheers. Neil

Amazon had offered more of the Foundation novels as pre-orders for under $10 each - but they were just pulled. Methinks agency pricing will be imposed on these too.

Now onto H. Beam Piper's The Cosmic Computer aka Junkyard Planet. Piper is best known for "Little Fuzzy" and "Fuzzy Sapiens", which are both good reads.

I just finished Changes by Jim Butcher, which was the novel equivalent of being kicked in the gut repeatedly, but in a good way.

I've started First Stop in the New World: Mexico City, the Capital of the Twenty-first Century by David Lida which gives a significantly different perspective on modern-day Mexico from what Changes did.

I had to laugh at that description of Changes. I've been discussing it off and on in different groups ever since most of the people I know finished it, but no one had quite as graphic a reaction as yours!
