The best strategy is to use a charge card, such as American Express, for the purchase. It includes a free 90 day accidental damage reimbursement policy: "Embedded Protection - Just use your Card and Purchase Protection protects eligible purchases against accidental damage or theft for up to 90 days from the date of purchase. Worldwide Coverage - Coverage includes eligible purchases made worldwide with the Card, including gifts purchased for others. Fine Print: Coverage is limited to up to $1,000 per Occurrence, up to $50,000 per Cardmember account per policy year, and is in EXCESS of other sources of indemnity." More information can be found at americanexpress.com. The above policy is available to US cardholders. |

Visa and MasterCard have similar protection plans.. Like Abe said, check your card policy.

Amex also adds one year to the standard apple care warranty. So if you have any problems after the first year that would have been covered by apple care, you can file a claim with Amex.

I've reported this in couple of threads.

Go to office depot, get a netbook case. They are the soft neoprene cases. I bought one for 19 bucks. Its like a minature laptop case. They also have the neoprene sleeves even cheaper, as cheap as 12 dollars. They are the same as many of the third part items sold at the apple store or other places except they don't have ipad in the items title and don't cost 30+. I also have the apple case. I put it and the ipad inside of the netbook case when I leave the house. Its hit and miss at the apple store finding one. I have an apple store 5 minutes from work and went by every day at lunch until I got one. I was really lucky, happened on the second day. |

cases are great for transporting but aren't going to help when you're walking around the house using your iPad, holding it in one hand. even a nice neoprene case isn't going to protect that large glass screen if it hits the corner of a coffee table. the glass apple uses isn't safety or tempered either, so if it breaks be prepared for lots of shards.

Seriously folks, it's small. For transport, I have a tin that Revlon makeup came in, glue-sticked in some bubble wrap and a sheet of foam, and it fits perfectly in my purse/laptop bag. The thick silicone skin keeps it steady when carrying it in my hand.

Think in terms of wooden Bible boxes, tins, Rubbermaid. Add some padding and you have a good sturdy box for it to go into a backpack or purse. |
