As far as attacking the OP, take a look at your emails earlier in this thread. Finally, I don't know what you are looking at, but the real Disney site is much, much richer, more interactive and more engaging than the iPad site. For the benefit of others, I am attaching a screengrab of the real site on the left, and to the right is a screengrab of the iPad site. Last edited by Sonist; 05-04-2010 at 08:31 PM. |

Well, you finally got around to doing some research of your own, well, after I had to provide the links for you. Congrats!
Let the OP fight his own battles, as many have pointed out, Flash not working was well known. Buying an iPad and then complaining about lack of Flash makes one look, rather foolish. I'll be curious to see screen shots of the Disney site on a Nexus (or any other Android based) phone, because I know it sure as hell won't look like the full desktop screenshot. I expect you to be complaining in the appropriate forums that those phones don't give the full experience as well. At least Disney took the trouble to code up an iPad site. Can anyone post screen shots of Disney's site from an Android phone? Since we know you have no intentions of buying an iPad, what is your motivation behind the constant bashing of the device? Really, I'd like to know. What keeps you coming back to this Apple forum to constantly bash Apple, Jobs, the iPad, h.264, HTML5 and champion Flash? |

For people that regular surf a lot of Flash heavy sites, all that matters is that currently the web would suck for them on the ipad. Now of course, people should just do their research an not buy an iPad if they want to do a lot of surfing of flash heavy sites on their tablets. But I also don't see the need for you to be so vigilant in shouting down anyone who complains about Flash and try to make it like their opinion is flawed. It's a big deal to some, and not to others--neither side is right or wrong as it just comes down to personal browsing habits. |

Looking at Sonist screen captures, with the standards that Apple wants to use, would Disney be able to have a similar site to the one currently done in flash, and if so, when?

Readjusting my workflow
(this may have already been posted, I didn't have time to read all the postings)
I'm finding I have to rethink how I work on the iPad. There are some irritating interface issues -- like not being able to attach a picture in email. Having to start in your photo application to forward an image is awkward, especially if you are replying to an emessage. Another workflow problem I had was a simple one. A relative asked me to send him some links. The process of compiling the list on the ipad was not as smooth as I would have liked (safari, copy link, open mail, paste, back to safari, rinse and repeat). Hopefully, later releases of application software and the upcoming OS release will help things. |

The most obvious is that HTML5 is still in flux, and anyone creating a site now, will likely have the standard changed under them (as it clearly states on the HTML5 FAQ page). Second, most browsers do not yet support HTML5. Google's Chrome current beta (which has integrated Flash support) is really the only major browser with relatively robust HTML5 support). Jobs just stated that Safari will have "full" HTML5 support "soon" (which is really nonsense, since the standard is not fully developed). MS also has announce support future HTML5 support. So, sometime in the future, we'll have HTML5, which everyone will eventually support. The question is, when HTML5 comes eventually, would it replace Flash? The answer seems to be "NO," at least for the foreseeable future. There is a lot of stuff Flash can do, which HTML5 either cannot do at all, or it cannot do efficiently. For a quick summary, take a look at something like 6 reasons why the "HTML5 vs. Flash" debate is idiotic My take is, that with the avalanche of Android-based tablets and phones coming in over the next year, all supporting Flash, there will be no reason for anyone to created Flash-less sites, since the vast majority of users will have Flash access both on their mobiles, and on their desktops. Moreover, I really doubt we'll be seeing much new iPad-specific sites like Disney, since it would mean that companies have to spend resources to build and maintain separate mobile, iPad and desktop sites. The coming full Flash support on most Android mobiles and tablets will mean much less incentive to spend the $$$$ to reach the very small portion of the market which consists of iPad owners. |

In what way is the Ipad not a good commuting device. I comute 60 - 90 minutes each way to work (catching two trains) and my Ipad has becoem a brilliant traveling conpanion. I have a wireless 3G modem which provides me with good coverage wherever I am. So I either surf the web, read my newspaper online pr browse forums, otherwise I read novels or school texts. Admittedly, I can generally get a seat on the train services that I catch so that makes it easier to use the Ipad.

My commute involves 25 minutes on an el train where I usually but not always get a seat about 2/3 the size as a normal man (me, 5'9" 175 40 Reg) needs. I find the iPad too big & heavy to "disappear." OTOH I once had a K2 and know that it would, particularly if the stupid key pad were to be eliminated, as would be the case for a touch screen. A Kindle Touch with exterior dimensions about the size of the iPad screen would be perfect. This is just about the size of a DVD case or a small trade paperback. Don't get me wrong - I'm very happy with my iPad, and for certain kinds of travel it is very nice indeed. But for immersive reading it works best in comfortable, non-mobile situations, at a table or in an easy chair. At least, that's the way things work for me. I could just go ahead & buy a K2 now, but I've been ruined by touch. |
