Just finished The Shooting Party by Isabel Colegate - a British country house weekend set during the days before World War I. It's a gentle read that deals with large themes on a small scale - particularly the decline of the British class system and the changes in country land management.

I'm reading "In a Dry Season" by Peter Robinson. I really like his "Inspector Banks" books and this one is turning out to be one of the best in the series.

Thank you so much for this review Neil.

I just got on this thread to post my comment about this book. I could not have gotten anywhere near what you wrote.

I downloaded Nick's book because I loved his introduction. And I was not disappointed. He made me giggle, shuckle, laugh out loud. I was one of those idiots you see in public laughing to themselves (warning: don't read this book in public or you will be too).

I couldn't put this book down - and although I didn't manage it in one sitting, I was there with Nick when he wrote it. It felt as if he was talking to me. Telling me about his life with it's ups and downs. And even better, a lot of what he said is stuff I could have said too (not the party incident - you know the one I mean when you read the book).

I felt I was there with him. Nick describes situations we all have found ourselves in once or twice (or if you are a slow learner more often).

I enjoyed the book and can't wait until the fog of time has wiped it from my memory so I can read it again and again and again.

After finishing the book I felt I found a fellow human who thinks similar to me in many aspects and could have been a friend if we just had met in RL.

Go ahead, get this book. I would be very surprised if you regret having read it.

I finished the Laurie Notaro book that I mentioned earlier, "The Spooky Little Girl.". It was very cute and has a happy ending.

But what next? My TBR list was nearly read before it was stolen, and now i'm reduced to none at all. Need funny. Suggestions?

(not Pratchett, more girly funny)

Try "life without breaks' not girly funny but I laughed a lot reading it. And for 1.49 you get a lot of laughs for your buck

For girly fun I would recommend the Queen Betsy series by MaryJanice Davidson. Laugh out loud funny

Have you checked the chick lit thread? There are some other recommendations there.

I did not know of him. I am always looking for more crimes . To read not to perpetrate, you dirty minded!

I looked him up. There are books on Sony Store and on Kobo. Do you know of others?

***I couldn't put this book down - and although I didn't manage it in one sitting, I was there with Nick when he wrote it. It felt as if he was talking to me ... I felt I was there with him***

Exactly, Katti's Cat. Just how I felt ... and that's what makes this book and the way it was written so unique. I have a sneaking feeling that Nick Spalding himself is going places AND that he may just have inadvertantly invented a whole new genre and a new approach to writing that might well sweep the world. Let's see! Slainte. Neil

PS: And here's karma to a fellow fan. N

Still trying to decide what to read next. I've got Robin Hobb's Dragon Keeper on my Opus but am a bit reluctant to start it now.

I was thinking of trying Cormac McCarthy, either The Road or No Country for Old Men. Supposing I can get either one somewhere... I haven't bought much since the Agency Model mess started and I don't know what's available now, and besides I've been having more and more problems with geo restrictions.

I also have The Portrait by Iain Pears in my wishlist somewhere.

Or maybe a French book. The Fnac catalogue is starting to look good although the prices are still outrageous. Besides I have finally figured out how to authorize and liberate epub books.

Decisions...

Either of the McCarthy books are excellent IMO. No Country is perhaps a bit more dark/violent (again IMO).

I love them both!

They were, not so long ago. I think I bought them at Books on Board. Unless it was Fictionwise, those are the two stores I use. The first book is called Undead and Unwed.
