I am going to miss the Flash ability when I get mine (Farmville, anyone?) but I think I'll live without it. I read Jobs' view on Flash and thought that they were some valid points. In the end, switching over to HTML5 would seem to be the future, anyway.

I had read somewhere that Farmville had an app coming out soon. There are many similar style games in the app store as well.

The iPad can display full websites and does not need just a mobile version of a site. But if the site uses flash for the site or the menus, then it just won't work on the iPad.

Take a look at http://www.astak.com/ and you'll see this site is going to be piss poor on an ipad as it uses flash for the main menu. That's wrong regardless of the iPad. There's no need to make us HAVE to have flash to use a website. Sure, parts of it may not work, but the main menu?

You won't miss farmville. Now Farm Town is another story and that you would miss.

Alright good, I just wanted that cleared up as I wasn't sure why someone would use an iPhone as how the iPad will work but I digress.

I wouldn't say astak using flash is wrong at all, since the one statistic in PC world I believe was 98% of PC's have flash installed. There are many sites that just use flash.

It's not using flash itself that's the problem. It's using flash for the main menu. Besides the IPhone/Touch & ipad, there are all the Android based devices that won't work (yet). And by the time the Android devices have flash, the owners will have bought a different brand reader.

If we are talking straight readers, then yes I would agree, but I was thinking more in terms of PC.

Yep. There are a ton of site completely designed in Flash, menus and all. They will not be viewable on the iPad, but will be viewable on everything else, including all the new Androids as of the latter part of May.

Many of the major sites, like Disney, Nike, Adidas, etc. are done totally in Flash, and will show only dumbed-down mobile versions on the iPad.

Smaller sites done in Flash, which have not bothered to provide a mobile version, will simply show the blue diamond.

But then, I don't see why Astak needs to worry about being viewable on the iPad - these are not the types likely to order an Astak device....

If I had a web developer who wanted to code up my whole site in Flash I'd be looking for another developer, there are quite a few platforms besides iPhones that are going to have trouble, not to mention most assist devices (browsers for blind, etc.). They are going to have trouble reading screen elements and navigation.

Flash is good when you need to have some interactive content, but menus, layouts, etc. should be coded in HTML/CSS.

As for Disney's iPad site, I'd hardly call it "dumbed-down", but since you don't have an actual iPad to test it on I wouldn't expect you to know that. You also shouldn't expect android based browsers to automatically give you a "full desktop experience" either. A lot of sites code up separate mobile versions that are given to any mobile device.

scottjl, obviously a lot of large and small companies completely disagree with with you, such as (again) Adidas, Nike, Disney, Reebok, most movie sites (e.g. http://www.avatarmovie.com), etc..

For sites which have to wow their visitors, Flash is the best and most efficient way to do it. It also reaches the widest audience. So, the iPad is disadvantaged here, and there is no amount of excuses that will change this. Live with it and stop trying to diminish its significance.

Regarding Disney, I can see the mobile version on my iPhone, and it is dumbed-down - it doesn't have anything close to the interactivity and richness of the regular Flash site.

Hmm. Well. I guess you spend most of your time shopping for shoes and browsing movie sites..?

If you look at your sample site http://www.avatarmovie.com you'll see a lot of that site's functionality is actually javascript, like the drop down menus. But most of the site requires flash. Nike uses flash on desktop systems but they actually have a pretty nice web site coded for the iPad too

As for the Disney site, as I said, since you don't have an iPad you're not getting the iPad specific site, you might try surfing to http://home.disney.go.com/mobile/?device=ipad to take a quick look, might not work right on your desktop though. :chortle:

The site you get on your iphone is: http://home.disney.go.com/iphone/index and it doesn't seem very "dumbed down" either. But that's your opinion and you're entitled to it.

Maybe. But on a device claiming to be "the best way to experience the web," I do expect the web to look like it looks on my desktop.

On one hand, you keep diminishing the importance of Flash on the web (and I guess Java, since the iPad doesn't support that, either), but on the other, you attack someone like the OP, for complaining that they miss Flash on the iPad more than they expected.

So, again, without Flash and Java, iPad have a substandard experience on the web. For some it may not matter much, but for other it will.

lol.. so you mean to tell me you believe all advertising you read? i guess that's why you shop for so many shoes. search "the best" in google and start your campaign! quite a lot of sites out there claiming to be the best at one thing or another.

flash is important, sure, and so were gopher sites 15 years ago. when is the last time you browsed one of those? and i don't recall "attacking" the OP (and if he feels so, he can take it up with me)

it's funny how you repeatedly seem to fail to do your research (like i just did for you the disney sites) and push out your opinions as facts. as you've said many times you won't buy an ipad and you feel it would give you a "substandard experience" on the web. as others have said, we get it... i've never seen anyone fight so hard about something they claim not to want.
