New firmware

As Bookeen noted recently on their blog, they're releasing a new firmware.

Oh, I had missed that part.
Does that means you won't be able to use 2.1 on gen to get the other improvement ? (metadata fix and so on). Or just that sleep mode will not work ?

I understand that it's not compatible, and so you if you try to update with it, you may brick Gen3.

I think that either they're planning to make different branch of firmware updates for Gen3, or they're done with it, and there won't be any more updates for Gen3.

I've checked with our dev team. They've told me that the new firmware features will in fact be available for the v3 Gen3 (2440 @ 400Mhz), however the earlier models are not compatible, unfortunately.

That's bad news for me

Is it a problem of memory or frequency ?
(i.e. v2 Gen3, which I should have, have 32 Mb of RAM compared to v1, which had only 16, if memory seves me well).

It's bad news for me as well, otherwise.And a lot of other people.

It's obviously a little annoying for people (which includes myself) with the older model, but I think it's the right thing to do, looking at the bigger picture. There's no point in holding back features from never models on the grounds that older ones can't support them.

I can understand that, and it makes sense. I can still feel sorry for myself, though, also because they almost never acknowledged that they actually had at least three HW version of the same reader, if I remember, and they tried for a long time, to have a single Firmware version. So one can still hope. I was just idly trying to understand what was the limiting factor.

We can only speculate, but perhaps it's a hardware difference between the Netronix EB100 (which the older Gen3's were) and the EB600 (which the newer ones are).

And then, they could try not to have the same firmware for all Cybooks, if they are different. I would not be unhappy to flash a firmware peculiar to my machine. But then maybe they should give us a way of differentiating among the various models.

Do we know if they plan to release a fix for the metadata bug for the older model (200 MHz 64 MB)? That's about the only thing I'd really love to have.

It's easy to differentiate from the serial number. If your Gen3 has a serial number beginning "EB600..." then it's the newer model. If not, it's the older model.

Not so easy when the back stickers are covered with a skin

Or does the serial number appear in the About box?
