I have to be honest, I don't like the spiral on the new lbook firmware. The ability for two lines per book is nice, separate the book title from the author.

I have been using that one for a couple of days now. The download that you linked to finally enables the caching feature that has been under development for awhile. I have not really experimented with the caching feature, but when using Windows to view the reader file system you will find a new folder for the cache called .cache in the /crengine folder. This is the only instruction that I know of for using the caching feature, and also a link to the version for the 6" reader.

"If you use the switch to the previous file, current file is saved in the cache. Opening a file from the cache works very quickly. For example, switching between files size ~ 500K runs a bit slower than paging (~ 1.5 sec.) "
FWIW, the "switch" being referred to needs to be assigned to one of the buttons, as it is not defined by default in the current button definitions. The switch function is available for custom button definitions in the CoolReader configuration setup.

Honestly, the larger font on the pop-up menu makes me want to try it. Having to get out a magnifying glass to read the menu is just tooooo small for me!

I tried it out. Not terribly useful yet - unless I am missing something. Cache only seems to speed up switching between current and last read book - i.e. just a toggle between the two. Plus you have to manually choose to insert it in the cache.

Opening from main bookshelf doesn't seem any faster. I would have hoped it would put the latest book in cache, then when you re-open a book already in cache, it would automatically use it. I guess there's lots of dev work still to come on this

Lbook Firmware

We are just a bit curious about this LBook firmware desire?

Can you all nicely state WHY you prefer the LBook firmware upgrade over the Astak version? We are curious because it should be identical. The speed is set by the hardware and not the software... so it is difficult to understand speed is the deciding factor. Is it the ease of the downloading or something else? What, to you, makes it a better route to take??

I am being asked by the PM on this. Be blunt. If we just seem to do a poorer job then state that. We are just trying to improve!
For me it's the ability to delete and copy files. That's what I am looking for. I use my SD card as a book storage and copy what I am actually reading to the HD. I also like the ease of adding additional fonts for CR3, I converted all my books to FB2 or changed the extension accordingly. I also like the bold function.

At this point, I'm on the fence overall about switching. Being able to delete and copy files sounds nice though.

When someone builds in a search feature? I'll be there. Just a brute force filename search would do--it doesn't even have to search the metadata--because I'm totally anal about how I (re)name my files when I have Calibre copy them over.

Hey Spiffy,

You don't have to "switch" - it's not like you're getting married or something. You can try it out and see if you like it. It's less of a fence and more like a chalk line on the ground. If you don't like it, just step back over onto the Astak side and re-flash with the Astak (or other V5) firmware of your choosing.
