I've seen many on the Internets. Do the Google on "bat house" and you'll see quite a few, with instructions on how to build them.

Well, not all bats. Fruit Bats/Flying Foxes eat fruit, and to build a "house" for them would require the work of an architect (they're rather large). We get them in our palm trees when the trees are fruiting, at least until the local ringtail possum comes and chases them out (possums pack a temper over territory). They've been visiting the rear neighbour's house lately - you can hear them by their big, dull wingbeats and their somewhat clumsy landings and takeoffs crashing through the trees.

Do you have bloodsucking bats?

Bats here are very small and discreet. The only thing we hear from the ones that live under the roof is some clicking sounds.

All our other (much smaller, normal-sized) bats eat insects, except for the Ghost Bat, which eats large insects and frogs, birds, lizards, lonely and vulnerable human souls, small mammals...that kind of thing.

Hi Patricia,
I can confirm you that in an unattended orchard the smell of fermentation is quite strong.
That this is in general a bad thing, or worst than for us humans, I have doubts.

Cardinals get quite an entitled attitude when you start feeding them - they expect you to be on time with fresh seed!
When I lived in a tiny 3rd flood apartment I put seed out on the windowsill every morning - and a pair of cardinals became regulars. I slept in one Saturday morning until I was woken up by the male cardinal - who was pecking angrily on the window screen and screeching at me - I was late with HIS breakfast!

Apparently we haven't worked out the schedule yet. They were early. And now I've got the biggest crow I've ever seen out there! At least I think it's a crow. Could be some new type of unmanned stealth aircraft. I guess I gotta pick up some roadkill too!
