If it is in the Topaz format you can end up with a book in minutes too, but the quality will be that of an un-proof read OCR document. So unless I desperately want the book I avoid purchasing topaz formated books from Amazon.
Is there a way of finding out whether a book is Topaz or MOBI before buying it on Amazon?

Two ways. First you can download the sample open it in notepad if the first characters are TPZ0 then it is topaz if it has BOOKMOBI somewhere in the first line or two then it is mobi.

Another rule of thumb is as follows:

Look up the book in Amazon's Kindle area.

Look under Product Details if it has a file size it's mobi.

And this is why I won't buy DRM-restricted ebooks.

Because those sales encourage publishers to do this to people like you , I won't even buy them and de-DRM them.

We have to support DRM-free ebooks with the only voice publishers will listen to: our wallets.

I was going to reply and ask if I did something wrong but I think I see your point. In a frenzy I bought two EBooks back then, Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants and Memoirs Of A Geisha. I was happy and all since I had some EBooks and may have read a few chaps. I dont really remember, I had a copy of Memoirs out from the library at the same time, thats what coerced me to buy the EBook. But anyway, after that comp crashed those two books wont read anywhere. Its actually rather annoying. I still have the files somewhere in hopes that one day Ill figure out a way to finish reading them.

Well, technically it's not quite the same if you convert it to ePub and view it on the 505... The Amazon book would be fully justified if read on a Kindle, but that isn't possible with the 505's ePub rendering.

Better to convert it to LRF.

Well, technically I said it is "exactly as I want it," which it is.

The last time I read a LRF book on my 505 it was left justified. That's one of the options PRScustomizer allowed you to set.

Reading my ebooks with left vice full justification is my preference.

When you use large fonts to avoid reading glasses and your ereader doesn't support hyphenation, then full justification causes large gaps between many words and really screws with the flow of the book.

I'm trying to figure out where else I can buy ebooks from for my PRS-600 and I don't fully understand the terminology or what a DRM versus non-DRM etc.. is. Can you explain what you mean by "strip the DRM" ? How do you do this when you purchase books from Amazon?

Do the ebooks from http://www.kobobooks.com work on the PRS?

Thanks!

A book with DRM (Digital Rights Management), means the book is encrypted and generally will only open for reading on the one device it was purchased for. You are not allowed share the book, you don't really own the book - just have a license to read it.
There are several systems for DRM. In the case of Amazon, the DRM system limits the use of the book to the Kindle. Amazon does not license other ereader manufacturers to use their DRM system. (You can get a Kindle app for the iphone, ipad, ipod, PC, MAC, etal., but not for any other competing ereader.)
A DRM free book can be used just like a paper based book you purchase. You do own it. You can share it, sell it, give it away, convert the format so it can be read on other ereaders, etc.
Stripping DRM from an eBook is a controversial process of removing the encryption from the book so you can freely convert the format for reading on other devices, share it, give away, etc.
This forum does not support or encourage stripping DRM.
The Kobo site says they use Adobe Digital Editions DRM on ePub and PDF books. This system is supported by Sony readers, so you should be OK. The better solution would be to buy DRM free books.

If you know the title or author of an ebook you wish to read, search on Inkmesh. This will tell you the prices at many online retailers. You Sony will read ePub and PDF. I only read PDF for free books and never pay money for that format.
Can you purchase eBooks from B&N website and read ot on Sony eBook reader?

Only if you remove the DRM (and convert if they're in eReader format).
