Its possible I tested it with my bad cable. I bought 2 devices and found out one of the cables was bad. It would connect to the device to let me send data but wouldn't let me connect to do a firmware update. Its possible I switched the cables I'll retest and let you know.

A couple of interesting things:

It looks like Paradigm Shift is now selling the Delstar - https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80972

Also, someone is selling them on ebay as the BookOpen E-Book Reader $144.00 http://cgi.ebay.com/BookOpen-E-Book-...#ht_4791wt_939
They're using Scott_T's YouTube video minus the commentary.

This is kind of an odd request, but can anyone out there test out a comic book on this thing and take a picture / comment on readability. I know the screens small, but I just want to see. It sounds like this would be a nice comicbook reader for my wife (she likes to read manga a lot.) Converting them over to LRF for my 500 never really worked well because of the lower PPI and res.

So it does PDFs ok now? If I get a formatted PDF from Feedbooks, will it strip the formatting and display at as TXT anyway?

I tried reading some comics and the resolution is good. I would say that readability depends on the size of the text though because some of the small text gets a little blurry. The zoom and scroll is slow but workable with patience.Larger text manga/comics are good. One other thing is that I extracted the images from a .CBR and rotated them so they come up as the correct orientation because .CBR is not supported. PDF's are ok as well but solo images load faster. No bookmark support for .PDF so that's also a sticking point for me. Your mileage may vary.

PDFs - Meh...

Received my Delstar Openbook today and immediately loaded the newest firmware (v1.02). I'm impressed with the clarity, but the screen seems to be a dust magnet, and looks to have a few 'bubbles' in the corners.

It does a good job playing Divx/Xvid files, and the MP3 player seems to work pretty good (it better since it's based on an MP3 rockchip), but the real downfall seems to be PDF files.
It views them pretty good and has 5 different zoom levels, but from what I can tell there is no way to bookmark a PDF. Pushing the M button just brings up a 'jump to page' option. When viewing an EPUB file the M button brings up a whole pile of options, including 'SaveMark', but nothing like it when looking at PDFs. This might be acceptable if it saved your place when shutting down, but every time you open the PDF you start at the very beginning of the file.

If there is anyone from Delstar who is still reading these forums, please look into bookmarking PDF files. It is the one major drawback of the current firmware.

Thanks,
Andrew

replacement for Palm?

I'm in the market for a replacement ereader for my Palm. Mainly want it for reading in bed at night with the lights off.

I've been using my Palm for that function for 6 years and am tired of the small screen, now that I have a real ebook reader. I love the ebook reader, but hate the fact that it is not backlit for reading at night.

Since I've been buying ebooks for my palm for 6 years I have a lot of PDB books and am mainly looking to use that format. Anyone try it out yet using PDB?

Which PDB format are you using? See the wiki to understand why I am asking the question. PDB is not a single format.

If you are using eReader then the Nook would be appropriate.
If you are using PalmDOC then the Hanlin or one of its clones would work fine.
If you are using something else then it is likely that none will work.

I'm using eReader. I have an eSlick which does a good job with eReader files.

But, it doesn't glow in the dark and I miss that. And, now that i'm used to a 6" screen, my little 4" Palm TX is too small. Basically I want a palm with a bigger screen.

Most people just get a book light and clip it to the case. However there are several new eBook Readers that are LCD based and some have backlights. Whether they support eReader I do not know but if they are running windows and perhaps WinCE it is likely. The newest I have seen is the Augen The Book which is described in our wiki. It might have WinCE support. I suggest you check with the company. Links are on the wiki page. And then check with eReader to see if they support it.

edit: It may be that the iPAD will also work.

New Firmware

I loaded up the new firmware (posted 5/21/10) but my reader still shows ver 1.02. As far as I can see nothing has really changed with the new firmware, and since they don't post any type of changelog it'll be tricky to figure out what (if anything) was fixed/updated/changed.

So if you get the firmware to work, what sort of prize do you win? I could not get the firmware to take on vista 64, after several tries. Every time I attempted it, the device would lock up, and required a hard reset to get it to power on.

Basically, how are the features if you can make it work at its current best ? Any way to get the text to be formatted? Do epub hyperlinks work? The hardware specs and price get me excited, but the bit I was able to play with was pretty poorly implemented.
