I would guess that it's a 4-cell proprietary battery, that's usually what those descriptions mean, isn't it?

Guess so!
I have an other point to bring to the whole discussion about the EEE. Everyone seems to favor an OS of somekind that they'd want ported to it. I would too but... I wouldn't mind a new one! As long as it recognizes the file types we are used to. MP3, JPEG 2,3,4, HTML, TXT, and RTF if possible. That's all I'd need for this device. |

The Eee will come with Xandros (a variant of Linux), Firefox, OpenOffice and Skype. See PCWorld's hands on article.
Adobe Acrobat Reader (for Linux) will certainly work, as will FBReader (for non-DRM reflowable e-books). |

eeeuser has a link to a hothardware hands on review. The 2nd page has good pictures of the user interface. They say the CPU is a 900 MHz Dothan based Pentium M. In the picture of the right side the flash reader slot is clearly labeled MMC.SD.MS/Pro.

I cooked this and the others up for some of my customers to see if a 7" screen would work... All PS but looks about right... Sorry its windows!
http://nightwing.smugmug.com/gallery/2985037#161651661 http://nightwing.smugmug.com/photos/161651677-L.jpg They should both print out on 4x6 photo ok if you go LR edge. Should have a bit to trim at the top and bottom. Will try shortly to work up a mockup of those screens... |

Could always glue some high capacity solar cells to the lid. Then do a trickle charge. Or depending on power in on the adapter jack could haven an external bat pack like you can get for Ipods etc. Wonder if I could cook up a paper mock up... Mat try this weekend or get freed from come customer projects tonight... Would be crew but could offer some insight that a 2d pix cant do... UPDATE: Note the two feet on the bottom... They slide...! ^_^ Also if the plate on the bottom then memory upgrade is not out of line of possiblity.. Last edited by Nightwing; 06-13-2007 at 01:40 PM. Reason: Saw somthing.... NotebookReview has a hands on review of the Asus Eee PC 701. Hardware and price seem to have changed slightly, now 3 USB ports (vs 4) and an 8 GB SSD (vs 4 GB) for about $250 (vs $199). Still late August for world-wide availability. Also, still no confirmation of the 7" screen resolution (assumed to be 800x480).

I'm prepared to take this unit at face value and I'm hopeful it will be profitable for Asus. I'm an electronic engineer and I've been looking for this kind of device for some time, even before the one laptop per child initiative.
My expectation has been that a pc company would follow the model of those all-in-one plug into your TV game systems that have been popular for a few years. Think about it, first they have an atari 2600 on a chip with 10 games, then China bootlegged the Nintendo system and included 50 or more games all built into a controller. Now they have the Sega Genesis on a chip inside most of those newer version with Spongebob and Spiderman games etc. These things have sold for around $20. http://www.jakkstvgames.com/ It should not have taken this long for a company to develop an x86 cpu on a circuit board with usb ports. I figured the first version would be a keyboard with an AV cable that ran on a few AA batteries and plugged into a TV. In my mind that could/would have been a pentium 1-3 equivalent that supported usb, flash cards, and had everything else built into a single circuit board like those games. The EeePC seems to be targeting a more upscale market than that by including a faster cpu and a built in LCD. That's understandable with the cost of small LCDs coming down so much in recent years. I think this thing will exploit a large untapped market, but it will probably also upset system hackers and modders when they realize the electronics are greatly consolidated into a few chips. I don't think they can mass produce these with any kind of modular construction like regular laptops. I'll get one, but I'll still be looking for the $20-$50 computer in a keyboard version to come along too. |

Jim, I think I will buy one too. My laptop is much heavier. I could just throw this one in a backpack and go. It would be my internet appliance when I am in a hotel and I could read on it as well. I am wishing for removable batteries so I can stock up for a 12 hour plane ride.
I am curious about the Nintendo clone with many games. The website you linked is very slow for me. Do you have a direct link to the correct device? Thanks in advance. I get really excited about miniaturization and all the "system on a chip" products out there. There have been credit card sized PCs (a circuit board) for 15 years now. A system built with one is slow, but very usable. |

Mogui, the link I provided was for Jakks Pacific who makes many of the officially licensed all-in-one games you can buy at the stores.
The Nintendo Clone has appeared in a number of varieties and quality levels. I've seen several and own a couple. Every one of them appears to be less than top quality construction. They are definitely a clone of the Famicon system in Japan which was widely cloned by China back in the 80s'. The inclusion of all the games and somewhat questionable manufacturing screams bootleg, but I've seen these units on sale all over the country at mall booths, flea markets, and reputable web sites. Just never seen one at a major retailer. The web link below is to one of them. Just make sure if you order, that the seller has contact information available on their site and is not one of those anonymous web vendors. That's my first test of legitimacy. http://www.superjoy3.com/faqs.htm |

![]() ![]() I'll go with 3 or4 Asus eee if they ever come out. They look too good to be true. If they do come out, they might boost the price threefold. ![]() |
