Hello Robertb,

sorry in advance if I am bothering...just I am keeping in touch reading news here but no news yet about that SiPix production... do you know maybe any updated news about it?...
Just so I can figure out about a possible period of begin selling 9"-9.7" SiPix devices...

Thanks in advance!

I am not Robert but it is likely the SiPix screen will be released in August I am told. It is 9" and 6". No 9.7"

It's eInk who produce a 9.7" screen.

I've been trying to stay informed on this as well but it's been hard (for me, at any rate) to find info on this. The latest I read was:

"However, SiPix encountered the problem of unstable submicron particle when the electric field is applied not to show the images. KY Lee, chairman of AUO, also personally looked into this matter and requested the company to solve the problem by this July in order not to miss the business opportunity of e-book at the end of the year. According to the internal resources, SiPix has adjusted the material and plans to resend the sample for approval. The mass production is estimated to kick off in Q3, 2010."

(Dated March 17 from here:http://www.computex.biz/HeadlineNews...?list_id=33750)

Also, DigiTimes is reporting the resignation of the chairman of SiPix, perhaps because of the production problems.

http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20100421PD210.html

This is dated just two days ago. Seems like there may be some chaos at SiPix.

If they don't fix the problems until July they may not start mass production until Sept or Oct -- still Q3 but consumer end products then may not appear until Nov or Dec.

Very disappointing. My hopes now are for the Adam. I'm willing to give everyone another six weeks or so and if no news is forthcoming I think I'll just get the BeBook Neo and wait until it wears out before worrying about large screen devices.

Thanks for the links. I don't doubt that the problem will be solved. The description is a bit confusing but I can attest to the manifestation of the problem as I was at least one of the people (maybe the only one?) who found it in my testing of a prototype obtained at CES. They were ready to ship I believe and that would have been a big problem. I prefer that they get it right before mass production although there are some that just complain that they are not shipping soon enough.

You didn't qoute the most interesting part of your Digitimes article dated from April 21st:
Quote:
Qisda, which is developing e-book readers using EPD from SiPix, has indicated recently it had problems with materials and manufacturing processes. But Qisda said that the problems have been solved and shipments will return to normal in June.
This sounds a lot better then September or October.

Qisda ereader's got 6" display. The point is: do problems affect 9" displays only, or both 6" and 9"?

BTW, check this: this is how Hanlin A9 will be http://www.mobread.com/news/exclusive/2010920.html
they say it will be a 10" display, though.

They got it wrong. There seems to be some confusion with e-Ink 9.7 which could be rounded up to 10" and the Sipix display which is only 9".

The problem is with both displays. I found it on a 6".

Yea, but this doesn't have anything to do with when it ships to consumers. The manufacture of the device will get advance copies but my information says full production won't happen for the new displays until August, to their vendors, not to direct customers. SiPix won't ship direct to customers.

OK, I would say: not before December (to customers), at least. At this point most of these ereaders will be already obsolete, I fear.

I think before that. I suspect September as they have the design in place and are just waiting for the screens. I have seen the units at CES but I am sure the firmware will be tweaked a bit before release to make it current as of its release. If Jinke gets final screens in August they should be able to turn them around in a month.

The 9.7" screen devices are not far ahead. Only a few have been delivered so obsolete is a bit strong. I suspect 9" screens and 9.7" screens will be around for years. The only thing that will make them obsolete is the fact that the 9" screens are a bit low in resolution at 1024 x 768 in my opinion. OK but not great.

Yes, but what about colour? What if by end of 2010 - beginning 2011 somebody else pops up with colour ereaders?

They will be slow and expensive. I don't think they will be a general threat anytime soon, although maybe a couple of years down the road will be different.

eInk color will certainly be slow and expensive, but if Mirasol ever gets going in consumer quantities it will be fast and expensive, but even lower power if you believe the hype.
