The cherry blossom is out on the trees here too (not in my garden but in neighbours' gardens). But you've reminded me, we have a jay that comes to the garden - pinkish, very beautiful but with an ugly cry, I don't know what kind of jay it is, it doesn't look like that picture of a blue jay - and I haven't seen it/him/her for a while.

could it be one of the many jays, or magpies? camping in Colorado used to be accompanied by camp robbers (a magpie) incredibly loud, and very thourough in going after the picnic tables

Plant more strawberries!

I feed them all winter long with these balls of fat and nuts in a net that they sell, hanging from the limb of a tree. Put those up arounf the strawberries. They also like the mighty peanut.

An other thing you can do is to use a cat. That will certainly discourage your little pirate and its soon to be children. Although the remedy could me bearer of more troubles than those you already have.

Kindlekitten, there's a link to the RSPB site here. I think it's slightly different to the photo you posted - but I must admit, I'm determined to make the most of the sunshine so I'm sitting outside and squinting at my screen here, and can't see much of anything. It's definitely part of the magpie/crow family, though. I thought it was quite exotic when I first saw it (or its forebear) a few years ago - til it opened its beak and squawked.

Apparently the Latin name is garrulus glandarius.

They do not count.

I dumped so much weedkiller in my yard, my tapwater is starting to taste funny and it's still freaking green out there! At least the belladonna is starting to gain some ground...

It would take more than a house cat or a small dog. That's how jays get their jollies!

I was thinking along the lines of connecting a motion detector to a fully-auto M-16. It works pretty good against mosquitoes; I just have to remember to disconnect it during girl scout cookie-selling season. Burying bodies is even more work than gardening!

I went outside to get the newspaper and found these hanging around my zinnias. They're colorful and happy and don't seem to bother the postman much so I think I'll keep them.

The mocking birds dive-bomb our cats all the time. But they know if they get too close to Scamp, it's all over. She's nabbed a few in her time. And in the garden, they learn to be careful in a hurry. The cats hide in the raspberry bush. Junior just chases them willy-nilly out of the garden. So even if he doesn't catch them, he can clear the area for a while.

Scamp pretty much ignores the dive-bombing birds until...she leaps!

Here's a couple of pictures of camp robbers taken at Mt. Rainier. I believe they're also called gray jays; they're small--about the size of sparrows. That fellow in the denim jacket is me before I went gray and shaved my beard. These were taken during the month I spent in Washington. Notice the lovely Washington weather!
