An evil mastermind bent on the destruction of my strawberry patch. My nemesis! Professor Moriarty to my Holmes! The Joker to my Batman! The feathered fiend of destruction! A blue jay who stares me in the eye daily with a countenance full of "What in the name of Hades are you doing in my garden, puny human?"

Don't talk to me about scarecrows. Scarecrows are worthless against a beast who has the unmitigated gall to fly down and steal strawberries from the very row in which I'm busy pulling weeds!

I'm thinking of taking out a professional hit on him. Where's Hawkman when you need him?

Yep those Jays can be that way. The worst one's I've ever seen are our Magpies -- something like a jay. They have no fear.

Actually I thought bluejays were very timid. But maybe the ones we have in Paris are another species? Or maybe I just hadn't met the right ones yet. I saw several of them in a park a few weeks ago, and they didn't look intimidated at all. But they were safely in a tree, not on the ground.

I'd be happy to loan you my cat. She is master of the yard and the birds hate her (and learn quickly just how fast she is.) Unfortunately, Scamp is a feral stray so getting her to you...little dicey. Junior, her offspring, is more easily loanable, but he tends to get into pounce mode, forget the target and fall asleep...

Timid. Snort! The bluejays around here are as large as some crows and definitely as obnoxious. They look beautiful--until they open that squawking beak and let loose with enough noise to fill a stadium...
