Oh and I've got a few Garlic plants that are 2nd year that have returned. I planed a few the previous year and actually got some nice fresh garlic. That the extent of my vegetable garden.

I'm leaning toward butter beans. I could always plant the tomatoes in place of anything that dies.

Just got back from planting the bell peppers, during which I also finished the unabridged audiobook of A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. Finished it just as the last bit of soil was being patted into place! Talk about timing! Time will tell. If they aren't, it won't be from lack of trying!

One of my favorite things to eat and grow fresh in a garden is pole beans. They are like string beans/green beans. mmm, mmmm, good! http://www.ehow.com/how_2169186_grow-pole-beans.html http://www.google.com/images?q=pole+...ed=0CCsQsAQwAw |

The first years (2 or 3) that I lived in the country, I had a huge vegetables garden, growing practically everything I could get. I even tried artichokes. Then I realized how much work that is. Watering, weeding, caring, fighting bugs, screening, sheltering, supporting, picking, cleaning, washing, freezing, turning the soil before frost, fertilizing, mulching, composting, taking medications for the back pain, ... Now I have only salads. And year in, year out, courgettes. Tomatoes are not so good here. I envy Tom's latitude. Certainly, to put the little plants in the soil or seeing the seeds sprout is a very deep and intense pleasure. |

...and I don't see why I should waste my beer, either ... me thinks I'll scout all slugs/snails out and leave them in a jar for the blackbirds and thrushes to feast on ... |
