Just finished #3 in the 'Ghost Dusters' series by Wendy Roberts. It's a about a crime scene cleaner who sees ghosts. This book was not as good as the first two. It was very predictable and often the main character would realize something important several dozen pages after I did.

I will probably read Nikolski next. It won the Canada Reads promotion at CBC so it was on sale. I am still undecided on whether I should return the Libre I got, but one thing I must say is it is very nice to have a second reader to slip my non-premium content onto. It makes it much easier to find the stuff I want to read on my Kindle.

I just finished Martha Grimes' latest "The Black Cat" - very well written, and her plot lines continue to intrigue. And it contains the return of the loveable (?) psychopath Harry Johnson.

Grimes has expanded Jury's investigations beyond the original small village setting into more cosmopolitan areas - but at the loss of a fascinating & intriguing cast of local eccentrics. Of all the "regulars" only Melrose Plant made an appearance - without his supremely irritating Aunt Agatha. I guess this widening of scope (much like what occurred in Murder She Wrote) increases the appeal of this series beyond readers of "cozies" but I really miss the entertaining and oft times acerbic banter amongst the regulars located in Long Piddleton!

Some new cat characters added (along with the return of Mungo the thinking dog) - but no appearance by Cyril.

The only consistent plot point with the earlier titles is the inclusion of a female child character wise beyond her years who helps solve the case.

A very good read, buy my nostalgia for lost characters keeps it from being a great read.

I just finished rereading "Ghost Story" by Peter Straub. Even after the 5th time, it's still a great horror novel. Since there are no decent horror novels being published lately, I'll probably wind up rereading "The Totem" by David Morrell. Reading recommendations gladly accepted!

Just finished reading Jeff Hepple's Home of the Brave, the third in his American history series. (#1 Gone for a Soldier; #2 Land of the Free); rereading Wuthering Heights for the umpteenth time. Also reading The Apothecary's Daughter by Julia Klassen. I like to mix a little light with the dark.

You're in for a treat! Fire was even better than Dragon Tattoo, IMHO.

Also, now that you've read the book, you should catch the movie. Follows the book pretty well and very good casting and direction.

Finished the first 5 books of Amber in a week and now I'm well into #6. I didn't think I would read all of them back to back, but so far it's been fun. I think I had read the first 5 all those years ago, although I don't remember much about them. #6 is obviously the start of another, but related, storyline, and I don't think I ever read that one.

Also continuing with Anathem, which has become very very interesting. It was really worth going through those first boring chapters

Thanks - I'll be starting Fire tonight and I'll certainly look out for the movie now that I know it exists

Oh yes. I read on the beach and by the pool, and it was very relaxing. If I did it at home, I wouldn't have gotten all the free meals/drinks, wouldn't have been in that nice comfy bed, wouldn't have gotten a tan, and would have had to leave both my work and personal cell phones on. Worth the money

Just finished the unabridged audiobook of A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. What a fantastically funny book! Ignatius J. Reilly is certainly one of the most outrageous comedic characters ever devised. It's really a shame that it wasn't published until over a decade after Toole committed suicide. Had he received the recognition he deserved during his lifetime, who knows how this may have affected that outcome. Certainly, had he written more (his only other novel was written when he was 16), our lives would no doubt have been the richer for it.

I recommend a book I just finished, The Ruins by Scott Smith I really enjoyed it
& have been told it's way better than the movie. Also finished The City of Ember which was also good but I think the movie was better.

I've tried twice to get into this book. Once in paper and once in ebook and can't seem to get past the first couple chapters. Sigh... Have to try again.
