I just noticed this statement in the Wikipedia article on the Tidewater region of Virginia:

"The Tidewater accent is a distinctive dialect of American English spoken in this region."

I just want y'all to know that this is a misnomer. We don't have accents in Tidewater.

Everyone else does.

Make it? Yes. Find a trustworthy supplier who actually knows what he's selling? Unlikely.

The last one I knew was the proprietor of an odd herbs and spices store, who sold blotter under the counter. The last time I saw him, many years back, he was planning to split to Amsterdam.

What finally caught up with him wasn't drug dealing, it was taxes. He'd never paid any. I think he ate a little too much of his own merchandise, because he wasn't aware he had to, till the tax people came to his door...

I didn't think I had an accent until I moved from RI to Florida. Now after being here for 15 years I think my speach has changed and when I talk to my family I can hear their accent very strongly.

Three years away with the Army opened my eyes.

But that was 40 years ago. I no longer hear a Tidewater accent.

even though I was born and raised in Colorado, we moved to Alaska when I was 6 weeks old and stayed until I was 5. linguistically Alaska can resemble western Canada enough that I guess it made its mark on me. no matter where I go in the US or Europem whenever I'm around well traveled people I'm asked if I am Canadian. which is funny because to me they have an accent as well!

I love my accent - it's a result of being brought up my my nanna, who still had a very strong Sunderland accent, and an aunt who had elocution lessons and a result sounded rather "plummy" (think Joanna Lumley but a tad more lovey with a dash of RP and you're there). So my natural accent is quite Home Counties with some very random NE UK pronunciation thrown in
