The recent episode, on saturday, I think was rather a poor story (shades of Discworld/City in the Stars notwithstanding).

I agree. Why, for example, can't they just have an X state without needing X sitting in X all over the place acting like X? And if X were endangering the X, then the X would be far more dangerous in X.

It plays on the thread about why we are willing to suspend disbelief on some aspects of a story but get stuck on others. Even when you are willing to allow a belief in time travel, the "solar flares" reason for the setting of that episode was so stupid that it wasn't even wrong. Yes; I used to be a professional astronomer, so I'm well aware of the silliness of that. But forget the "science" - Doctor Who has never been about accurate science, any more than "Star Trek" has; I just thought that it was a damn good story.
