The bill/act is redundant no matter what happens. Eighty-six lines of code surfaced a few days ago that will lead to complete anonymity through Bittorrent. God, but I love pirates.

Let us not forget that the Digital Economy Act does a heck of a lot more than the "copyright infringement" measures which have been so focused upon. It also contains provisions concerning:
  • the functions of Ofcom
  • Internet domain registries
  • the functions of the Channel Four Television Corporation
  • the regulation of television and radio services
  • the regulation of the use of the electromagnetic spectrum
  • classification of video/DVD and computer games
  • public lending right in relation to electronic publications

All of these measures are pretty uncontentious, and many are highly desirable - especially the PLR extensions.

Eighty-six lines of code, that's all it takes. Eighty-six lines of code to freedom. Eighty-six lines to kill the corporations. Eighty six is such a beautiful number.

The code is only the first step, as it stands it actually does the opposite of what we want. Don't worry, the pirates will help us all to freedom.

But it would be funny if someone insterted the IP addresses of all the MPs who voted in favour of the BPI Act into lots of pirate swarms.

It'll happen. Then again, the MP's that rushed this crap through haven't got a clue what IP stands for. I believe one of them actually thought it standed for Intellectual Property.

They keep pushing, we'll just push back, and unlike them, we actually know what IP means.

I beg to differ.

Ofcom have to produce new reports, but cannot act on them because their mandate to do so was stripped. It's waste paper. Then there's the blatent powergrab over Nominet, the ridiculous fast digital radio switchover push, the very broadly worded powers making games effectively banable and censurable at the government's (not parliament's!) whim...

Moejoe: I had only a vague idea of what IP meant (something to do with a coded address given to someone who goes online, IPS referring to the server of the IP....er....something along those lines, I think! ) so I did a google search. One of the first entries was this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_property

Yes, IP does stand for both Internet Protocol and Intellectual Property - but for a legislator (like the Minister for Digital Britain !) not to know which meaning is being referred to is an inexcusable display of incompetence imho.

Do you really think that the digital radio switchover is being rushed? I was under the impression that it wasn't happening until 2015? I know that I've not had a "non-digital" radio for years, other than my car radio.

I should clarify. They did not know what the IP in IP Address meant. They are MP's though, so we're not dealing with the sharpest of people to begin with.
