A long time ago, I saw a documentary where these people living on the shores of Lake Victoria caught a kind of gnat to eat it. At some time during the year the gnat eggs all hatch on the lake's surface, and you see great gnat clouds. These people just swing baskets in the air to catch the gnats, and then make a kind of paste of them. It's a delicacy. That's what I remember from that documentary anyway, but I may have some details wrong, it's not a recent memory. |

Where's the choice for birds? My canary, Tweety, is the funniest little yellow clown in the whole wide world. Right now, he has a little yellow cast on his wing. He flew into a ceiling fan last week and broke the end of his wing. So now he is in his boring cage, because we had to take out everything that he could hop on in order to not re-injure it. So he is coming up with some other clownish behaviors. The funniest is when he will hide behind the mirror that we lowered down to the bottom of the cage, then peek at us over the top, then duck down, like he is playing peek-a-boo.
Right now, he is sitting in the corner of his cage, trying not to let me see that he is pecking at his cast, so that I won't yell at him to stop. He thinks that he has pulled the wool over my eyes and I'll never find out. |

poor little guy. one of the barn kittens fell out of the hay loft once and broke his upper leg. he ended up in a full leg cast, he also ended up as an indoor cat. watching him try to manuever that thing the first week or so was riot!

LOL! I imagine he was fun to watch. Do you remember that our ancient barn cat was gone and that we needed another? A kitty finally turned up and solved our squirrel problem. Now it hangs around down by the creek ditch fishing for crawdads. There is usually a cat down there because there are soooo many mudbugs! |

I was standing in line at the post office Tuesday night to send my hard earned dollars to the Government, and this guy ahead of me had four large cartons with holes in them. These were obviously made just for shipping live critters, and they were making clucking and cock-a-doddle-do sounds. The fellow was shipping live chickens, and at least some of them were roosters.
There is a nefarious subculture here who like to watch male chickens kill each other with large steel knives attached to their feet, and gamble on which one will survive. It must be quite a business, because when I watched him paying the postal clerk, he had several one hundred dollar bills out. Anyway, I didn’t see chickens as one of the choices. |

If they're being used to kill each other I don't think they count as pets.
I favor cats, because they are beautiful and relatively self-sufficient. But dogs would have been a close runner up because they are more demonstrative and you can take them for walks and get exercise that way. A dog is supposedly a better exercise buddy than a person--a person may try to talk you out of exercising but a dog always wants a walk. |

Dogs and cats will always win as pets because of the interaction we have with them. Yes I know ferrets are interactive too. But a lot of other so called pets are really exhibits.
Fish will come up to the top of the water to get food, but they don't warm your head in the middle of a cold night. |

Those guys treat those chickens better than any pets, right up until they put the spurs on and put them into the ring.
