Your peeing comment reminded me of our old neighbor, he used to mix pee and chewing tobacco spit, put it in a sprayer and spray all around his garden to keep pests away.

I remember when I was a kid people talking about tobacco "juice". I wonder if soaking it in water would be as effective as spitting it?

What a great idea! Surely many pests would want to avoid the smell of human urine!

yep, the urine is VERY effective! oh and dog fur as well! I also have old feed bags that I use in some places as weed mats

I think I posted this once before, maybe not... my Uncle used to kill one crow a year and hang it in his little cherry orchard. crows are very social and kind of freaky about the deaths of their own. they stayed AWAY due to that!

Any newspaper? And can it then just be tilled into the ground at the end of the season? No harmful effects from using it repeatedly?

I'd rather live with the mess than harm one. I was hoping for a non-lethal solution. I don't hate them, I just don't want them crapping on my car!

I wouldn't use the "slicks" the advertising bits. not real sure about color either. other than that it is ok. there is a place around here that takes used newspapers, shreds them, sells them as stall bedding, which then decompases quite nicely in the manure pile

it always really bothered me as I quite like crows, but as he said it was only one. oh well. other than the fake owls, eagles, snakes, or mylar ribbons, I don't know what you can do

Keep in mind I've never tried it, I'm just going by what I've been told. Personally, I would worry about the chemicals from the ink seeping onto my dinner table via roots of the plants, but whether that could actually happen I don't know.

if you contact your local extension agent, they can answer those questions, but I've always been told it's not an issue. and trust me... people who keep their prissy ponies stabled all the time wouldn't put up with any chemical issues

Neither of these require shelling. Snap peas are a thick pod, entirely edible. Snow peas are a flat pod, entirely edible. Both are in Chinese and Asian cooking a lot. They do well in cool climates--I start mine in the winter here and keep them covered during freezes.
