Can some one tell me EXACTLY WHAT ASTAK SUPPORTS ? in the way of PDB ?

Honestly, I, like the original poster, bought PP specifically because of eReader PDB support.... In fact, I took back another eBook Reader I had recently gone through efforts to buy because of no PDB support.

It really is confusing as everything/where says PDB support.

I know the old Palm devices used PDB books (which I have a ton)

So, am I screwed (as far as this topic goes people....haha)

It is confusing because pdb is NOT a format. It's just a database file that Palm invented. You need to discuss what is inside the database file. Although not entirely accurate, think of a zip file that might have epub, or fb2, or lit or anything inside it.

I was also curious about the "yew" thing. Any other words that cause problems.

As long as he doesn't start using liseuse, I'm fine with it.

*ps- dont get me wrong, i like my replacement choice, just it would suck if pdb is not native supported... will look intot he link that was posted for explanation, thanks all....
Dear Cancelx:

PDB stands for Palm Doc Book.

Ereader is a format developed by Fictionwise (and is a derivative of PDB and often mistaken as the same)

Brief history:

1. 1.5 years ago we sold the first Astak EZ Reader. That first order came with Mobipocket as the DRM format.

2. Kindle (within a few weeks) said "no you cannot" after the fact and we were left with NO DRM support at all.

3. At the time, two wonderful brothers owned Fictionwise and said: Yes, Astak, you can have our eReader format on your device; but we need to develop a Linux SDK.

4. Weeks became months and no SDK. They worked hard and so did we checking almost every day.

5. Adobe comes out with Adobe Digital Editions and accepts us. We finally have a DRM.

5. After about 7-9 months, Fictionwise said SDK almost finished. With this coming SDK you can port it to your device.

6. Just before they send SDK, B&N buys Fictionwise. That meant they own eReader too. Worst possible timing!

7. Cost now goes up and B&N demands exclusivity (meaning we cannot have both formats on our device. We paid a ton to get Adobe and people loved it.

8. Tried to negotiate out the exclusivity... but no luck. Fee was acceptable but we could not go with no Adobe.

So, we still want eReader but cannot get it due to exclusivity demand. Yes,you are confused and so are we. Please try to understand that things change when giant companies get involved.

hey Robert.

Thanks for the great return to school days for me, haha.

I only needed something like, eReader PDB is not the same thing as original PDB which meant Palm Doc Book.

But you do go above and beyond and that makes Astak something to support !

Seems my books are Palm Books so, its all good to begin with.
My first unit, the Aluratek Libre I don't think supported ANY PDB (even old ones) at all.

Thanks again !
PP will do the PDB I need !!!!!!

Dear Cancelx:

I almost always say more rather than less. Besides, others will ask the same question and need to know what happened. A lot of times I reply to you; but the info will be read by many!

I am happy you are happy!!

Nope sorry. It stands for Palm DataBase.

From the wiki I linked to earlier

Code:
"PalmOS keeps all RAM storage in a database format.
There is no file system in the RAM. When sync'd to a PC these databases will be saved in separate files and this is where the extension is added.
All files in device RAM must be in Palm Database format,
whether programs or data.
The PDB files created for external storage are data files,
which can contain arbitrary content. "
It's a general purpose database container - not Doc or Book specific at all.

Actually to correct what RobertB wrote. PDB is Palm DataBase format and has nothing to do with Books except that while everything that Palm users have is in any database format and thus eBooks are too! The first eBooks on Palm were in PalmDOC format which is what the PP supports.

I know you didn't say it first but RobertB's post was long to quote

It is my understanding that the PalmDOC format does not support formatting? No bold or italic, etc.? Or has that changed?

PalmDOC does not support any formatting beyond paragraphs. The format has not changed. It is possible to have a TOC in the format by using the bookmark facility built in but the PP does not support that. However, that said it reads like a TXT file that has been broken up into paragraphs and flows nicely for standard fiction style books.
