The action moves along swiftly, and the twists and turns are fun. They're really more fantasy in a science fiction setting than actual science fiction, but that doesn't worry me. Some loose ends get tied up by the end of the second book, but there's clearly room for sequels. I don't know off-hand if any were written. A sequel isn't required by the story though. Hey - that was my 60th book this year! So let's pick another random choice from the pile. The First Expedition by Steve Jordon. The author's name seems familiar! But since it's a sequel, I'll read the first book instead. That's The Onuissance Cells by Steve Jordan. Last edited by pdurrant; 04-14-2010 at 05:39 PM. |

Right now I'm reading Firefly Island by Daniel Arenson... I know the author and read the book in hardcover a couple of years ago. I was very excited when this fantasy fave of mine was recently made available on Kindle!!
I'm also reading Savor, a book about eating mindfully. Really enjoying it... I didn't think I'd enjoy reading *that* kind of book (more self-helpy/spiritual) on an eReader, but it's truly been a positive experience. |

Albert Camus - Exile and the Kingdom (L'Exil et le royaume)
I've not read anything by Camus since I was 15 or 16, and I've never read this collection before, but the first story blew me away, absolutely amazing. The story in question is called 'The Adulterous Woman' (La Femme adultère). |

Reading Mr. Murder by Dean Koontz. Compelling and well crafted. My only beef is my usual with Koontz--the good guys are so unfailingly perfect that it's hard to relate to them. The bad guys, on the other hand...

Finished the Book Thief and devoured The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao which is excellent and fully deserved the Pullitzer IMHO. I'm now continuing to move on alphabetically to something lighter - A Certain Chemistry by Mil Millington. We'll see whether it lives up to the standard set by Things My Girlfriend and I have Argued About. After that I think I am going to briefly jump off the alphabetical ship and read Horns which I just got and which is burning a hole in my M-Edge cover

Attempted to read Accelerando by Charles Stross, while it had some interesting ideas and such, I found it utterly boring, no action/suspense, maybe a little humor. I was just struggling through it to be honest so I ended up tapping about 1/3 or so the way through it. I have a few other Stross books that I thought sounded interesting but I am not sure if I want to attempt another or not. Any thoughts? Should I attempt to finish Accelerando?
Got my "new to me" Nook this week which was the same time I tapped on Accelerando. I purchased Thereby Hangs a Tail which is a Bernie and Chet mystery and the sequel to Dog on It. Loved it. It is written from the dog's perspective(Chet). The author really seems to have nailed down the mind of a dog somehow. Lots of laugh out loud parts and action/suspense. Pretty quick read but thoroughly enjoyable. Not sure what's next yet, gotta look through my TBR pile and pick something. Have lots of cheapies and freebies I picked up recently so should start plowing through them. Last edited by ould; 04-16-2010 at 10:54 AM. |

Hmmm.... I too tried to read Accelerando - first in pbook -- couldn't finish, then as an ebook - still couldn't finish. Too long with not much action.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith.
Cool story that interweaves Lincoln's true life history with a vampiric horror tale. Ending didn't quite fit with the narrative, however. If you've read it, you know what I mean. |

I just wolfed down Cockroach Suckers by one of our newer MobileRead members, David Niall Wilson. It's a very fun and creepy tale of extraordinary happenings on the borders of the Dismal Swamp. I thoroughly enjoyed this tale, I highly recommend the book, and I'll be reading more by this author; who just happens to live on the other end of the Dismal Swamp from me!
