You might want to check out a fairly new series by Seanan Maguire's October Daye series. It starts with the book Rosemary and Rue. So far only the first two books are out, but more are coming.

I really enjoyed the Joe Pitt series by Charlie Huston.
While it's more horror than urban fantasy, you might look into David Wellington as well. He's got a great vampire series. You can read the first book, 13 bullets, online at his website. |

I'm not sure if this counts as dark/urban fantasy, it's sort of an alternate universe historical urban fantasy (I'm making the genre up as I type). At any rate, it's not your usual urban fantasy but if you like urban fantasy you might enjoy the book "The Light Ages", by Ian R. MacLeod. It was one of the best books I read last year. There is a follow up novel set in the same 'verse, I've got it on my TBR list.
I read an urban fantasy series last month geared towards young adults, called "The Mortal Instruments". I really enjoyed some aspects of the novels, others not so much. All in all it wasn't a bad read. |

I liked Charlie Huston's Hank Thompson trilogy too. Check his website pulpnoir.com sorry I don't know how to make it a link.

I would think, yes.
You can see that the series I recommended above are all set in modern day, except the hollows which is modern day alternate reality which split in history about 40 years back. Those series cover everything from magic to vampires to werewolfs etc... What would you recommended within the magical realism area? |

It's not very dark, but I loved "Stalking the Unicorn" by Mike Resnick. Then again, I love almost everything from Resnick.

A Madness of Angels by Kate Griffin might appeal.

Another one to consider is 'Spellbinder' by Melanie Rawn - about a witches coven in New York city. There's definitely a strong romance theme, but not too much "heaving bosoms" and "throbbing members".

A lot of good recs. I didn't see Carrie Vaughn's Kitty books (about a werewolf with a radio talkshow) or Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniel's series (Magic Bites, I think is the first book). I also liked the Webmage by Kelly McCullough (computer hacker in a world where magic is now controled by a master computer). The Wildside books might fit too (first is Traveler). Have you tried The Parasol Protectorate? It begins with Souless.
