Hi Neil - welcome back

I've never heard of Mary Johnston before, but it sounds interesting. Thanks for the recommendation.

Good to have you back!

I agree with you about Under the Dome. First, it seemed like King jammed 1000 pages into a 600 page novel. Second, I got the impression he just churned this one out for the Christmas market without anywhere near the work or thought that went into such excellent books as The Stand or It.

I understand he is releasing one for the Summer market. Hopefully it'll be better

John Updike's In the Beauty of the Lillies, though, was absolutely breathtaking in its style, story and characterisation. Quite brilliant -- as we've come to expect from Updike. Highly recommended. This one will be re-visited often.

Welcome back Neil! I hope all went well!

I will check out the Updike book. I've never much cared for King.

Your post sent me to Wikipedia, and you're right. I have no idea where I got it in my head that this story unfolded in the early 50s.

Interesting, it appears that right after the events described in the story, she left her husband and moved to Seattle.

I've been a fan of dealing with the Devil tales since the original Twilight Zone TV show of the late 50s-early 60s. Would you mind telling us a bit more about this story?

Minor spoilers for Johannes Cabal (no more than you would find on the back cover)

Spoiler:
A Necromancer renegotiates his deal with the devil when he finds that the lack of a soul interferes with certain "experiments." Also it involves a Dark Carnival story. The author says he was inspired by "Something Wicked This Way Comes" and wondering just where a dark carnival would come from.

I just noticed on Amazon that a sequel is coming out in July, Johannes Cabal The Detective.

Thanks! Sounds like a book in need of being placed on my Wish List at Amazon!
