While on vacation I read several books.
The Egg and I by Betty MacDonald. It was only OK but I'm glad I read it. Jog Rummage by Grahame Wright. It starts out like Watership Down with hedgehogs but takes a 90 degree turn about halfway through. Very good though. Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons. Excellent though I liked the filmed versions (both the movie and the series) better. Johannes Cabal the Necromancer Great. A darkly humorous tale about a deal with the Devil. and I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence by Amy Sedaris. Hilarious, plus some good recipes. |

She obviously didn't care for Native Americans. To be sure, it was a different and less enlightened era, and even children's cartoons of that time depicted American Indians as either ferocious animals or buffoons who communicated via a single three-letter word vocabulary. Even so, her attitude did seem calloused, even for the 50s. She certainly didn’t seem to abide by the Native American proverb that says to never judge someone until you’ve walked a mile in their moccasins.

![]() I forgot I also read Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter which was OK but not as good as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which I suspect benefited from being mostly written by Jane Austin. |

Just back from a couple of weeks in hospital, during which I put my 505 through its paces.
I was a tad disappointed by Steve King's Under the Dome. This time, King didn't suspend my disbelief as he usually does and I found the whole thing -- especially when it came to the cliched explanation for the dome in the closing pages -- a bit like a long, shaggy dog story that fell flat. John Updike's In the Beauty of the Lillies, though, was absolutely breathtaking in its style, story and characterisation. Quite brilliant -- as we've come to expect from Updike. Highly recommended. This one will be re-visited often. And Mary Johnston's 1492 was an amazing read. Anyone into historical fiction would lap up this one. It's one of those books you wish you'd written yourself. I've not read Johnston before, but her research is impressive and her unusual style (perfect for this book) is wonderful. Another Highly recommended. Must read more Johnston -- anyone any titles to point my way? It's good to be back at Mr, even though my visits will be short for a few days yet. Holdong a sitting position stings like hell. Best wishes. Neil |

Now for another random selection. A freebie this time - at least, free when I 'bought' it back in October 2008. Now $6.48. The Reincarnationist by M. J. Rose. |
