Bottom line: reading on the iPad is hands down the best ereading experience I have had. I find so far I prefer the iBooks app, mainly due to the horizontal dual page presentation.

The weight is an issue, and I do not anticipate getting rid of my PRS 700 for a portable read. But for at home reading, the iPad is superb. The additional functionality is just extremely tasty icing on the cake.

* I've only "purchased" (it'ls free) the pooh book from apple, all the other books on the iBooks app are dedrm'd epubs from various sources.

I hope that kindle and kobo will keep working on their apps, then dual page view rocks!

Can you link us to your iPad case? Thanks.

Can someone please try the Kobo app on the iPad and let us know how well ePub with embedded fonts work? So far, there isn't yet (that we know of) a decent ePub app. iBook is not ready for prime time yet.

I was hoping txtr would have made their app on the iPad.

One more thing.. how do we get content on the iPad for the Kobo app other then having bought the ePub via Kobo?

Man, this is my thread. I need input! I bought a PRS-300 from Target liked it ok still have it, but wondered how the iPad would be as I swiped my card. Well, then I tried the PRS-900. Took it back last week because $60 more I could have the base iPad. It was expensive! Still have the 300 and considering returning it and the light cover which will pay for half the iPad. Should I do it? I can't justify having both. I just bought a new Macbook in January and love it. I just don't want to play repeat buying the iPad. Thanks for posting this thread... Its' not a "high five" thread.

I'll answer your question with a question. Dou you want use your laptop less? If so, the iPad is a great device and reader. I wouldn't recommend getting solely for reading. But using it as your reader and for freedom from you larger devices is awesome.

I found that as well playing around with my girlfriends iPad.

I preferred using it to my laptop for net surfing (when I wasn't wanting to post on forums etc., just read/browse), streaming video, looking up sports scores etc.

It couldn't replace my laptop with an iPad or other tablet as I need to be able to type, run statistical analysis programs and other intensive software.

But it would supplement my laptop for more than just reading, though that would be the main use with PDFs, newspapers, magazines, comics and novels.

I'd return what you have -- then go check out an iPad at a local best buy or Apple store. There's not going to be a universal truth on this topic. You have to try it to see if YOU like it. I know I sure do.

Do you read outside in the full sun most of the time? If so, an eInk ereader would be better. The iPad is certainly heavier. With it's case, that's not as big an issue for me as it was at first.

Are you attracted to all the OTHER things you can do with your iPad? Surf the web, read magazines and newspapers in full color, play videos -- and lots and lots of apps? Then get an iPad.

i'm quite happy with my ipad overall, more than i expected to be. the reader applications all have their good and bad points. i miss using stanza on my iphone (not that i can't use it here, just that the blown-up version is too ugly). so hopefully someone will write one that more fits my liking, but until then it's i have ibooks, kindle, kobo and wattpad, and goodreader for my various books.

i too like the apple case/slipcover. i don't understand the negative press about it. i like the easel function of it, and the nice rubbery feeling so it won't slip out of my hands. best is that it's not bulky with added padding.

compared to my 600. i feel it's an equal trade. i liked the 600's smaller size, lighter weight, and longer battery life. but i love the ipad's display, extra functionality (movies, web, mail, etc.) and the battery live is actually very good. my 600 will be looking for a new home soon.

strictly speaking about reading ebooks. the ipad is more than adequate. the screen is beautiful, large, text is crisp and all apps let you change the size of the text. functionality of the apps varies, some let you take some notes, some not. some let you change page and text colors, some don't. some have dictionaries, again, some don't. but at least you do have choices in functionality. if one app doesn't do it for you, you might be able to try another (depending on your format). with the hardware-based readers, you're stuck with what you're stuck with (barring the various firmware hacks out there).

for people who cry that books are better on eink/paper/clay tablets. well, then the ipad isn't for you. everyone's eyes are different, the ipad's IPS LCD poses no problems at all for me and i've gone for a few hours reading on it straight (long flights). they weight isn't a problem for me and there are numerous stands or ways to prop it up, so i'm getting over those complaints.

i agree with leebase. if you want a device that is strictly an ebook reader with no or minimal extra functions, feel free to pick from one of the many available. i expect their prices to start dropping as they start competing with the ipad, joojoo, hp's tablet, and the other devices coming to market. if you want something you can read with, and do a lot of other things with, then definitely check out the ipad.
