Personally, I'll carry a gadget, a belt loop, a backpack, a laptop case, a briefcase, a shopping bag, a protective sleeve.... but I draw the line at a man purse!

Well, I have two very precious wooden boxes, made by the best craftsman in North America! ;-) One is for the Reader, of course, and very much like the masterpieces that people have seen pictures of here. But I use it selectively. If I carried it around all the time on the go, I'd fear scraping it or dropping it or losing it or having it stolen. On the other hand, it sure beats a purse!!!!

Oh come on... use it! It is cheaper than the reader! It will save it from accidental dings!

If you want my opinion, that box will survive that reader because you'll buy a new one when they get better and more powerful. Then you'll be stuck with a half empty box with no more purpose, nothing else will fit in.

If it gets scratched, wood can easily be refinished, that's the beauty of it. Use it!

Ditto!

The history:
She wanted to buy me a birthday present and when I said that maybe I could use some sort of portable device to read books, so we didn't have to take any heavy hardback editions when we were going on holiday, she said Go for it! A spooky coincidence...it happened in October 2006. When I went to another forum and asked for a piece of advice regarding the gadget, I was told that Sony was the best for my eyes because of eInk....after some research I realised that eInk was the only acceptable option for me because I did not want to strain my eyes anymore than I already did. Unfortunately, I found out that they didn't sell it outside of the USA. I decided to wait for a while (my birthday was in February anyway )...then in January I gave up on waiting and (lucky me) found bhphotovideo and joined mobilereader a few days after I received the reader.

I can't win. My wife asked me to show it to her sister. I tought she was proud that I found a unique techno toy and wanted me to share it but after I handed it to her sister, my wife said "he doesn't ever read it". I explained I have read several books since I bought it but she said she never see's me read it. I said because when I'm with her, I try to devote my energy and attention to her. She said I was full of &*$%.

And I gave up watching sports on TV for this.

My girlfriend tolerates all my gadgets as long I "spend enought time with her"

Since I use my Reader to read on the way to and from work she's ok with it.

He's read books online, but I think it will be a while until he converts. But we'll see; maybe when my arrives he'll keep stealing it from me.
With the conversion tools we have available, it's very easy to get content onto the reader and then later on take that same content and move it to a different device if so desired. Besides, to be totally honest, there is no standard just yet. MobiPocket seems to be closer to a standard though. But with Digital Editions coming out for Linux sometime next year that could change things. So for now, things are still in flux. So any reader you buy now won't be standard. I'm glad you didn't listen to your BF

My wife was flipping channels one day a couple of weeks ago and stopped on ShopNBC. Lo and behold they were selling the reader for $149.99 She remembered that I had been wishing for a reader for a while and ordered it as an early birthday present. I love her so much

Now she says I spend too much time with it and not enough with her. Oh well, I'll have to figure out some sort of compromise.

Easy, buy her a Sony Reader so she can be hooked and spend her time with it so she won't be able to complain that you are taking too much time with your reader.

My wife thinks it's a nice gadget (she's generally fairly tolerant of my gizmophilia), and sees that one might be useful to her professionally in a couple more generations (she's a university prof.), but right now, she's happiest when I can find someone other than her to tell about how wonderful it is.

She does like the fact that my voracious appetite for shelf space has been somewhat curbed.
